Sharing Holiday Cheer
It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Miss New York Teen USA 2017
Kayleigh Balcarcel was selected out of over 200 candidates as a State Finalist to compete for the Title of Miss NY Teen USA pageant being held on January 14th, 15th and 16th at the Performing Arts Center of Purchase College in Harrison NY. Kayleigh, age 17, a Brookhaven resident for all of her life, is currently a senior at Bellport High School whose name she will represent in the pageant. She hopes to attend either Penn State or The Fashion Institute
of Technology next year. She is very involved in the plight of the less fortunate and volunteers her time in helping the Lighthouse Mission of Long Island, in their many outreaches. She helps to hand out food, collect clothing for the less fortunate and volunteers in the Christmas toy drive. She hopes to win the Title of Miss Teen USA to bring forth more exposure to the needs of the less fortunate when it comes to the scarcity of food and clothing resources on Long Island.
Kayleigh is the daughter of her very proud parents, Carlos and Brenda Balcarcel of Brookhaven. Kayleigh raised the necessary funds to manage the expenses to compete by starting a go-fund me page where her family and friends donated as well as getting sponsorships from local businesses and money she raised in her part time job. CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION - Just in time for the holidays, the Early Childhood Department at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip, put on a production for Christmas. The children came in costumes, and helped to tell the story of the First Christmas Night. They sang songs, and there was even a surprise visit from Santa. It was a great day for all!
