There is a fundraiser set on January 26th, 2014 at Farrell’s of Brooklyn located in West Islip from 1 to 5 p.m. to assist Aidan’s family to cheer him on in Sochi as well as offset some of the costs that the family has incurred to give Aidan the opportunity to compete at this level. Nineteen year old Aidan Kelly, of West Islip claimed the third spot on a 3-man U.S. Luge Men’s Singles squad after a tight 5 week World Cup racing circuit with stops in Lillehammer – Norway, Innsburck - Austria, Winterberg – Germany, Whistler, Canada and Park City, Utah. The World Cup racing circuit served as the Olympic qualifier for the upcoming Sochi games in February. The qualification process for luge is comprised of tiers. Finish in the Top 5 and you receive an automatic Olympic bid with a A Tier finish. Finish in the Top 15 two times and you receive a

B Tier finish. Finish in the Top 15 once and 2 Top 21 finishes and receive a C Tier. In Park City, Utah; the 5th stop of the Fall World Cup Travel circuit Aidan crashed in the first run of a two run race eliminating him from the race. Aidan had to hope that his previous C Tier qualification would be enough to secure his Olympic dream. Fellow teammate Taylor Morris was chasing Aidan on his heels and needed a Top 15 finish to secure his C Tier qualification and force a tie breaker with Aidan. Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a press conference to announce the commencement of yearround Sunday bus service on ten bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.” “We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County, said County Executive Bellone. “Investments in our infrastructure serve as economic development initiatives which will help to grow our economy and provide for a sustainable economic future.” “This expansion of service is the single largest increase in service in the history of Suffolk County Transit,” said John Corrado, President of Suffolk Transportation Services. “I am pleased to be a partner with Suffolk County and continue to look forward to opportunities where we can provide our riders with enhanced services and improved communications. Alexa Gilberti, a Senior at St John the Baptist DHS of West Islip has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC on February 14th-16th, 2014. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Alexa Gilberti was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent St John the Baptist DHS NY based on her

academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. During the three-day Congress, Alexa Gilberti will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what is to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cuttingedge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Alexa Gilberti are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want
