Upcoming Vote To Sell West Islip School District Masera Building On Jan. 19, West Islip School District registered voters will take to the polls to cast their ballots on a special proposal to sell the Emil D. Masera property to Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC. The contract of sale between the District and Terwilliger & Bartone Properties LLC was adopted by the board of education this past September and the district has conducted several public meetings to discuss the details of the sale. However, for the sale to be finalized, it will require approval from the community. Polls will be open to registered voters on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the West Islip High School gymnasium. Absentee ballots are also available for those residents who cannot vote in person. Absentee ballot applications can be obtained on the district website (http://www.wi.k12.ny.us/Assets/

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary

heart disease. Antioxidants called ﬂavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-proﬁt is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to ﬁve gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, longhaulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted.
