Even if you are an inland boater, you may travel to an area where knowing about tides and tidal currents is important. The boating public is invited to the Tides and Currents Seminar, on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the East Islip Public Library at 381 East Main Street, East Islip, NY 11730. This seminar will cover how the sun and moon create tidal patterns, sources of information about tides and tidal currents, simple ways to predict height of tide and speed of current ﬂow and how to use both print and electronic tide tables. Learn about tides and currents from experienced coastal boaters. Each student receives a full color Student Guide for the seminar. DiCapua And Sgueglia Recognized As Suffolk Zone Winners

West Islip High School students Robert DiCapua and Amanda Sgueglia were recognized as winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone Awards, given to students who best exemplify exceptional physical performance, scholarship, character and citizenship. The two seniors were recognized by the the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at the Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on Dec. 3. DiCapua has maintained over a 97 average in honors and Advanced Placement courses, has an A+ average in physical education, and

scored 1300 on the SAT. Currently ranked in the top of his class, he has been on the Principal’s List every quarter and is an active member of the National Honor Society, Business and Marketing Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. A two-sport athlete, DiCapua has earned multiple AllDivision and All-County honors in football and baseball. He plans to major in finance and is deciding between attending Bentley University, George Washington University or New York University. Sgueglia, an altruistic, compassionate leader in the classroom and in competition, has been

recognized as an AP Scholar, earned a 1430 SAT score and is an active member of the National Honor Society, the National English Society and World Language Honor Society. A decorated student-athlete, she earned multiple All-Division honors in soccer and lacrosse. Due to her leadership, she was selected captain of her varsity soccer team, leading them to a recent Suffolk County large school championship. Sgueglia will attend Union College in Schenectady, where she will major in mathematics and compete on the women’s soccer team.

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? The West Islip HS Football team leads by positive example, both on and off the field. The players recently visited Good Samaritan Hospital, spending time interacting, talking and playing with the children in the pediatrics wing. During the month of November, the team wore custom jerseys to support local Veterans in honor of Veterans Day, and entered the field carrying 50 American ﬂags. In October,

players wore custom pink jerseys to support breast cancer awareness. The team understands the power of random acts of kindness and the profound positive impact those acts have on others. The positive inﬂuences the players experience from parents, fellow players and their coaches, has led the team to support all students, regardless of their cognitive abilities.
