Celebratory Mass And Ribbon Cutting Of The New Community Center At St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

On Sunday, December 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Fr. Demetrios Kazakis, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Town Councilman Terry McSweeney, and West Babylon Fire Department Commissioner John Manzi for a celebratory mass and ribbon cutting of the new community center at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in West Babylon.

To the surprise of all those gathered for the ceremony, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America elevated the Reverend Demetrios Kazakis to the rank of Economos of the Archdiocese for his role in not only helping to make the Church a fixture of the West Babylon community, but also for his work and leadership in the rebuilding of the church following a devastating fire in 2015.

In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so ﬁrst responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the

most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating

USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and

complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck

with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room.
