In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

KELLY UREÑA office’s initiatives in the provision of adult classes to Wyandanch residents and served as the social worker for Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School and Lafrancis Hardiman Annex. “The Wyandanch Union Free School District is so proud of Kelly and her contributions to our schools, and her accomplishments,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gina Talbert. “Her dedication to our students, their families and the Wyandanch community has been instrumental in our district continuing to rise and build future leaders who can
follow in her footsteps.” Ureña created social emotional learning classrooms for the Milton L. Olive Middle School, where students engaged in various activities to help address SEL needs. She supported the Wyandanch community volunteering and coordinating volunteer efforts to provide interpretation services at the Wyandanch COVID-19 testing site alongside the Suffolk County Executive Office and the Town of Babylon. She also coordinated the Wyandanch School District’s community food distributions with donations from Island Harvest Food Bank. As a leader in her profession, Ureña offers professional development in her field and is known for her work in strengthening families, communities and building partnerships. She is a lead dialogue facilitator for Latina Moms Connect, serves on the board of The Long Island Latino Teachers Association, and sits as a trustee on her local school board. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The Wyandanch Union Free School District’s social worker, Kelly Ureña, was honored at the Town of Babylon’s 22nd annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Oct. 26. The virtual celebration, which was live streamed on the town’s Facebook page, highlighted three local Latino figures and acknowledged Ureña for her important contributions to the Hispanic community. During the celebration, Ureña attributed her love of community and her role with the Wyandanch School District to her parents who instilled in her at a young age the importance of being a helpful and kind neighbor. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Shaffer offered their congratulations and thanked Ureña for her ongoing, selfless service. Ureña has served Wyandanch schools since 2015. She is currently the social emotional learning specialist at Milton L. Olive Middle School. Prior to this role, she worked as the community site coordinator leading the family and community engagement

World Kindness Day Celebrated Continued From 7 to the food pantries at St. Joseph’s & First Presbyterian churches in Babylon. The Pack wanted to push that number up to 15,000 pounds and then additionally contribute pet food and supplies to a local pet rescue group. On Saturday, November 14th, Cub Scouts, friends, families and dogs joined together for a car parade led by the Babylon Village Fire Department. Also in attendance were Babylon Village’s Mayor Mary Adams, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Babylon Village Trustee Robyn Silvestri. Several Cub Scouts decided to bike the parade route, showing off handmade signs. At the parade destination, Cub Scouts Sam Garvey and Jack Burke led a group of volunteers to collect and organize food donations. Volunteer efforts varied from a first-
grade Tiger Scout holding up “Food Drive” signs on the sidewalk to Babylon Village trustees sorting canned goods. At the end of the day, Scouts had fully loaded up two minivans with boxes of food and filled half a pickup truck bed with pet supplies! After bringing the donations to the local food pantries, the final tally was confirmed. Donations weighed in at a total of 908 pounds, bringing the Garvey family’s total to 15,355 pounds of food! Cub Scout Pack 104 wishes to thank the local community members that came out to show their support and encourages everyone to consider acts of kindness. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much.
