Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two
separate volunteer sessions; a Morning Session from 10AM12PM and an Afternoon Session from 1PM-3PM. Volunteers will be sorting non-perishable food items, along with other items. Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. Registration is required; to do so, please email Bailey Riekkinen at briekkinen@ addressthehomeless.org. Other Ways To Get Involved: •Organize a non-perishable food drive. EXERCISE AND SMILES ON WALK TO SCHOOL DAY - Babylon School District students pounded the pavement with their friends and family members for Walk/Bike to School Day on Oct. 6. Whether riding their bikes or sporting their favorite sneakers, the students started their day with some physical activity before they made their way to their respective schools. They joined together with classmates around the neighborhood for the event. At Babylon Grade School, teachers and staff greeted students with pom-poms and music as they entered the buildings. Babylon Elementary School students were also welcomed with music, and teachers collected sneakers colored by students to create a Walk/ Bike to School banner. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District for Fire Prevention Month and conducted outdoor assemblies for all K-5 students on Oct. 19. Students were able to see how firefighters put on their gear. They learned about how firefighters use their trucks to fight fires. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents
participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.
