Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Martin Earns Eagle Scout Award

RAISING MONEY TO FIGHT CANCER - Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board recently welcomed Asaf German, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Long Island Chapter’s Man of the Year who raised $460,000 for cancer research and treatment funding, to Town Hall. German, a North Babylon High School graduate, set the record for money raised by an individual in the organization’s history. Supervisor Schaffer, also a graduate of North Babylon High School, congratulated German, who is a local real estate attorney, for shattering the old fundraising mark and creating a new standard. Some of German’s fellow North Babylon classmates who remain in contact were also in attendance, as they helped him collect donations.

David Martin of Babylon, has earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. David received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor ceremony held in North Babylon. David’s Scouting career began when he joined Troop 399 in 2014, where he proudly served as Troop Assistant Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Troop Guide, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. The Court of Honor signifies a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout is achieved through hard work, with the recipient required to have earned

at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership and have a positive impact on society. Scouts are required to complete a project that benefits their community before ascending into the ranks of Eagle Scout. David’s project was to refurbish the children’s garden on the property of Marion G. Vedder school as well as put solar lights in the alley outside the cafeteria. The garden was built in memoriam of 2 members of the MGV family that passed away, a fifth grader who lost her battle to cancer and a beloved security guard. The solar lights were greatly appreciated as

many community groups use the alley at night to get into the cafeteria for meetings. Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, and a member of the Sagtikos District of BSA’s Suffolk County Council. It is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has been serving the community, turning boys into leaders and giving families the opportunity to participate in Scouting for 40 years. The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:
