Physical activity has never been more important than now during the pandemic when individuals’ defenses against the COVID-19 virus need the immunity boost an activity like walking can provide. About 50 Long Islanders took that advice to heart and joined the Walk with a Doc, led by Northwell Health cardiologist Dr. Puneet Gondotra, around Argyle Park and surrounding streets in Babylon Village on Sunday, September 20, 2020. Walkers and event organizers kept safety in mind, including providing on-the-spot education about pedestrian safety laws offered by experts from the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety (NYCTS). “More people are out and about walking and biking because of COVID-19,” said Cindy Brown, executive director of NYCTS. “My organization wants to be sure that these pedestrians

and cyclists, as well as motorists, are aware of the laws benefiting pedestrians’ safety. Most people are unaware of the laws, but a visit to the WalkSafeLI website provides a quick link to the state laws. Everyone owes it to themselves to learn the rules of the road.” The Village of Babylon hosted the Health and Safety Day event which, in addition to the walk and pedestrian law education, featured trauma education led by nurses from Good Samaritan Hospital, and information about safe driving tips and transit alternatives from other organizations. Stony Brook Medicine’s mobile mammography van was also onsite. The event also recognized the start of Long Island Mobility Week, an effort led by Transit Solutions to get people to utilize other forms of transportation. The group was there accepting

Car Free Day Pledges for that recognition day that happens September 25. The Long Island Health Collaborative helped organize the event around its Walk with a Doc chapter, an international movement that pairs community residents with a community doctor who leads them on a walk for good health. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats. This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past. Homes may have carved pumpkins on the doorstep and paper ghosts blowing on tree branches. And horror movies will no doubt dominate streaming service top 10 lists, but thanks to the COVID-19 virus, certain Halloween traditions may not be possible. Depending on regulations in your city or town, parties, trick-or-treating and school functions (if school is in

session) may be canceled or significantly modified. Since COVID-19 is so easily spread, health officials have long touted the need for social distancing. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? • Maintain social

distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall wellbeing, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. She walks the walk she talks, continuing to take classes and to train seven days a week. “Never stop learning and growing,” Ms. Colesanti tells her students. “Listen to those who have already done it and learn how to do it yourself. And never give up. When you fall, find out why, analyze and learn from your mistakes, have a good cry, then get back

up and get back to work.” Ms. Colesanti is a selfmade success story. She is the founder of the Ballroom and Latin Dance Program at the Archimedes Academy for Math and Science in the New York City school system. This diverse, multicultural program serves students of all backgrounds and abilities, including those who are physically challenged. She is also the owner of Dance With Us studio in Syosset, where she not only teaches dance technique, but also mentors, advises and promotes confidence in aspiring dancers of all ages. “If you don’t practice, you don’t progress,” is Ms. Colesanti’s philosophy. “And if you don’t want to practice because you are bored, tired or overwhelmed, you should consider another career.” Her advice is from the heart, as she never wants to see one of her students set themselves up to fail. “You have a choice in what you do,” she counsels them. “You pick and choose your life. I count every day a blessing when I can do what I love.” Ms. Colesanti holds a master’s degree in education and counseling from Hofstra University, a bachelor’s degree in theater and dance from the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, and New York State certifications in school counseling, drama and dance.
