After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses. That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift. Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, hosted the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9. The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose

in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the support needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families. The Walk along the

8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk To Support Overdose Prevention & Education And Addiction Treatment Services On Long Island historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. It offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones.
