BABYLON VILLAGE ARTS COUNCIL RECOGNIZES POETS - On the evening of August 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey met with the Babylon Village Arts Council and Suffolk County Poet Laureate Barbara Southard at the Babylon Gazebo across from Argyle Lake to recognize the winners of the Council’s Poetry Contest. Terri Muuss, Linda Trott Dickman, and JR Turek placed in the competition, and received awards from Legislator McCaffrey and the Arts Council. Poet Laureate Barbara Southard also received awards from Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams and Legislator McCaffrey for her work in promoting and finding innovative ways to grow the arts during a pandemic during her term, which began in 2019 and ends this year. Richberg, along with Guy Calla of Legislator Kevin McCaffrey’s Office also joined Detective Mullen’s wife Patricia, son Patrick, other family members, officers from the Suffolk County Police Department and dozens of guests at the ceremony. Detective Stephen Mullen was a devoted husband, loving father, and a decorated 26year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department, spending much of his career serving the residents of the departments first precinct. Prior to joining the Suffolk County Police Department, he was an officer with the NYPD in Brooklyn. He passed away at the age of 55 in December of 2018 from cancer related to his heroic efforts responding to the World Trade Center following the attacks of September 11, 2001.
“After 9/11 happened, Steven volunteered to go into the city, even though he told me he was being sent into the city because he had experience there. He never wanted me to worry about him,” said wife Patricia Mullen in her remarks at the ceremony. “If Stephen were still here today, I believe he would still be working… he loved working. He enjoyed mentoring the younger officers,” she added. Councilman Terence McSweeney spearheaded the effort to get bench dedicated in honor of Detective Mullen saying, “the Town of Babylon is honored to share this bench with the Mullen family because of the respect that we have for our police officers, fire, EMS and all first responders not only in the Town of Babylon, but around the country.”

On the afternoon of August 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso had the pleasure of recognizing John Manzi as the outgoing President of the Suffolk County Fire District Officers Association. John is also an Ex-Captain and current Commissioner of the West Babylon Volunteer Fire Department. During his tenure from 2019-2020, Manzi worked to secure better equipment and
environments for our Fire and EMS personnel across the County, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic. His hard work and dedication to his own Department and Suffolk County as a whole are certainly commendable, as evidenced by the large number of dignitaries who took the time to speak of John’s accomplishments. Also on hand to help honor Commissioner Manzi were Suffolk County Legislators Kevin McCaffrey and Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone,
Deputy Commissioner of Suffolk County Fire Rescue Pat Beckley, New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, State Assemblyman and Association member Joe DeStefano, former Legislator and Association member Rudy Sunderman, and a representative of State Senator Phil Boyle’s Office, as well as West Babylon Fire District Commissioner William Klein, Chief Michael Vergano, Ex-Chiefs Scott Carrigan and Christine Manzi, and Ex-Captain Brendan Klein.
LEGISLATOR MCCAFFREY RECOGNIZES INTERN - On the afternoon of September 4th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey welcomed local student Ryan Tighe and family to his District Office in recognition of Ryan’s graduation from the Suffolk County Legislature’s Page Program! Ryan represented Legislative District 14 in the intensive twelve-week program, which is designed to provide a select group of local college-age students an immersive look at County government. PAGE participants work hand-in-hand with Legislators and Legislative Aides to understand the roles and responsibilities of the Suffolk County Legislature, while also gaining hands on experiencing working with and assisting constituents and learning about the many agencies that make up Suffolk County government. Ryan, of Lindenhurst, graduated from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School earlier this summer and is headed off to a four year program at St. John’s University! WARM WELCOMES IN WEST BABYLON - The sun was shining and West Babylon School District’s students were excited to start the new school year on Sept. 2. With backpacks filled, students entered their buildings with teachers and administrators on hand to welcome and guide them. The kindergarten students were accompanied off their buses and met by staff to explore their new teachers and classrooms. Sixth and ninth grade students were also welcomed into their new buildings and had the chance to get acquainted with their teachers and classmates.
