Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and ﬂourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. Scout Troop 2780 in North Babylon and have been Girl Scouts for nine years. For their Silver award the girls decided to take part in sewing over 120 whimsical pillowcases to benefit Ryan’s Case for Smiles. An organization aimed at creating an emotionally uplifting boost for kids in hospitals. These pillowcases enable the kids

donated. Which enabled them to make so many pillowcases. During this project, the girls learned all about a dying trade; they learned how to cut, pin and set up the sewing machine as well as how to use the sewing machine effortlessly. Through their efforts they were able to sew and deliver over 100 pillowcases. The Long Island liaison for the organization, Samantha Bunster was extremely helpful in helping the girls attain their goal and deliver the pillowcases. This project meant a great deal to the girls as they learned many things along the way such as the importance of communication, community, delegation, preparation, modifying skill levels, time management and team work. They truly enjoyed doing this project and feel good that they were able to bring smiles to many future children’s faces as well as hopefully uplift some of these children’s days that may be very difficult.

New York Mets star Michael Conforto, a 25-year-old outfielder who was an All-Star last season, recently said that he wanted to lead by example. “If I am going to be a guy

who is going to be sticking around,” said Conforto, “I’ve got to step into a little bit more of a leadership role.” While Conforto was talking about his role on the field, he’s been displaying

plenty of leadership off the field. Today, “Scooter,” as he’s also known, visited dozens of youngsters at The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at NYU Winthrop Hospital as well as its Children’s Medical Center. The visit was part of Conforto Cares, a program established by the player to raise awareness about pediatric cancer and the challenges faced by young patients. As part of the program, Conforto had already hosted young NYU Winthrop patients and their families at Citi Field, but Conforto wanted to do more; he wanted to come and see where the youngsters are being treated and spread sunshine and hope in these important places. “My goal is to bring cheer and inspiration to these young children while also raising the visibility of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases,” said Conforto. “The Mets have been extremely supportive of my efforts, caring deeply about their communities and helping me to give back. I hope to inspire these young patients to

stay determined. If we, as a broader community, stay determined, maybe one day there will be more cures for childhood diseases.” Conforto distributed Mets t-shirts to the pediatric patients and family members. He also handed out pop-up replicas of the Mets home-run apple and presented autographed photos. The event followed on the heels of patients and family members visiting Citi Field last month at Michael Conforto’s invitation. During that outing, the youngsters were given a tour of the stadium and Mets clubhouse, and they were shown scoreboard operations including how to raise the homerun apple in centerfield. The children also enjoyed batting practice in the Mets batting cages and joined Conforto for lunch in the ballpark. Michael Conforto was so inspired by the spirit of these young patients during their visit that it prompted him to expand his program and initiate visits into the communities, such as the one held today.

“Michael’s desire to create special experiences for these children and their families really makes a difference,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology at NYU Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. “Children look up to professional athletes and meeting one like Michael Conforto and getting special memorabilia, it renews the vitality of these young patients and that’s so important.” Added Conforto, “It’s a privilege to help these children forget about the rigors of their treatments and just enjoy being kids.” The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital offers a range of early detection, diagnostic, intervention and treatment services, both inpatient and outpatient, for children’s cancers and blood disorders. Dramatic improvements have been made in pediatric cancer patient survival, with nearly 80 percent of children cured of their malignancies. Each CCFK patient receives the latest treatment regimens,

and most participate in national protocols that serve to further the science and treatment of childhood malignancies. Conditions treated at the Center include leukemia and lymphomas; bone, soft tissue and brain tumors; hemophilia; sickle cell disease and more. NYU Winthrop Hospital Children’s Medical Center offers broadscoped inpatient specialty programs and services. The Medical Center also features a Child Life Program aimed at easing the fears and anxiety of children who are hospitalized, addressing their emotional needs through play, fun-filled activities, education and support. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman and event organizer Jackie Gordon and the rest of the Town Board welcomed over 1,400 riders to Town Hall for the 2018 Soldier Ride. The event, a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and ends at Overlook Beach, has raised around one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project in 11 years. Other notable elected officials were in attendance, including Congressman Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini, Suffolk County Sherriff Errol Toulon, several New York State Senators, Assemblypersons and local village officials.

Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington was also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony. “Councilwoman Gordon and our staff continue to raise the bar for this event every year,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Participation keeps getting bigger and bigger, which speaks volumes about how great this event is. Thank you to the Wounded Warrior Project for being great partners and the work that they do,” he added. Joe McDonald, a building inspector with the Town, is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He, along with the help of his department, raised over $6,000 for the event before riding with his fellow Warriors. “The amount of money raised by Joe McDonald is

a testament of how much respect the people within the Town of Babylon have for our Veterans,” said Councilwoman Gordon. “In the 11 years since we have had this event, we’ve raised over a million dollars that have gone to helping Veterans who have made enormous sacrifices. As a fellow Veteran, I’m honored to organize this event each year,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a ﬂyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency response departments and sponsors welcomed the riders.

“The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying bodies of the dead to be observed; it does not however - forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to the Christian teachings.” Although cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body. The Catholic Church strongly prefers that the body of the decease be present for its funeral rites since the presence of the body most clearly brings to mind the life and death of the person. Therefore, the recommendation of the Bishop’s Committee recommends that cremation takes place following the funeral liturgy. “The cremation remains of the body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came.” This includes a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the matter in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport and the final disposition. Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea - from the air or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the church requires.
