TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).
Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on.

There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory.
I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process.

Hats Off To The West Babylon Class of 2020 While the ceremonies may have been smaller, the excitement, encouragement and accomplishments were vast as the West Babylon Senior High School Class of 2020 celebrated its commencement exercises. To keep to social distancing practices, the district held seven ceremonies during the course of a two-day period on the West Babylon Junior High School football field on July 30 and 31. Each graduate was seated with two invited guests on the field, while others could view the ceremonies livestreamed at home. Following “The StarSpangled Banner” by Jenna Halvorsen and Darren Del Orfano, Carissa Brock took to the podium for “God Bless America.” West Babylon Senior High School Interim Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo, who is retiring next month after 26 years serving as principal of the school, welcomed the soon-to-be graduates and attendees. “I have been able to cheer for you, applaud you and encourage you to be your best selves,” she said. “The final chapter of your senior year has been like none before you. You will be remembered for your perseverance through this time. Embrace all
this because it has made you stronger and more compassionate.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly asked the members of the class to be reflective and stay true to themselves each and every day. “I am truly honored to be standing here as your superintendent of schools celebrating this significant achievement that ends your high school chapter but starts an exciting new one,” she said. “Throughout your junior high school and high school careers, I have seen, heard and cheered you on throughout so many of your accomplishments. You have made me, your parents and this community so very proud. Whatever path you choose to take, be reflective. Ask yourself every morning, ‘how can I be better than I was yesterday?’ Stay positive, maintain hope and stay true to your character and beliefs. Stand up for what’s right; stand up for those how have not found their voice. Reflect and learn from your mistakes. Be kind to others as you never know what that person next to you is facing.” Board of Education President Lucy Campasano offered her words of advice
on behalf of the school board. “I am so proud to have been a part of all that you have been through,” she said. “I am also proud to be a part of all you have accomplished. I know the last few months have been filled with many moments of sadness and joy – joy for completing one incredible journey and beginning a new one. And sadness for the prospect of leaving the people you love. Put to use all the things you have learned through your very unique experiences. You are stronger and more adaptable than any other class. Your trials have molded you into who you are today and who you will be tomorrow. You have helped one another through it all; you have survived because you were there for each other. Be kind, share everything and when you go out into the world, hold hands and stick together. In a world where you can be anything, I implore you to be kind.” As each member of the class was called to the podium one by one to receive their diploma, Dr. Vassallo and Dr. Farrelly offered their congratulations. After the conferring of diplomas, the graduates marched off the field to the school’s song “Like an Eagle.”
