In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

ceremonies, the district also hosted a virtual ceremony. The first ceremony on June 26 kicked off with Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach and North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp highlighting the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Prior to receiving their diplomas, the 354 students heard from several speakers who shared their wisdom and
words of motivation for their new journey. This included Superintendent Eschbach, Principal Klomp, and senior class co-president Katie Doyle. Valedictorian Bryan Sabogal and salutatorian Carlos Sabogal were unable to attend the live ceremonies due to the pandemic but had their speeches streamed during the virtual ceremony. Principal Klomp made introductions and thanked all those who

11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-
long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. After the 2019 event, Cynthia Sucich of The INN shared “The Over 50 Fair is an AMAZING event that focuses on the various needs of those who are... Over 50! The INN is so
honored to have been the chosen charity of the event for 8 years. Babylon High School recently honored its exceptional Class of 2020 with a series of four graduation ceremonies. On June 26, all 135 members of the graduating class gathered on the school’s football field for a “Senior Farewell.” Wearing masks and separated by six feet in all directions, the seniors listened to a reflection by senior class president Madaline Graham, a greeting from principal Al Cirone, speeches by salutatorian Katherine Hannon and valedictorian Anna Romero Mejia, and a farewell address by math
teacher Frank Mancuso, for whom the students had voted to speak. Due to Governor Cuomo’s 150-person capacity limit for graduations, only students were permitted to attend, but the event was live streamed so that proud families could watch from home. On June 27, BHS held three diploma conferment ceremonies, during which the names of all graduates were announced. Each session included 45 students, each of whom were allowed two guests. Graduates left these ceremonies with their
tassels on the left side of their caps and as official BHS alumni. The Babylon Union Free School District congratulates the entire Class of 2020 on their achievements, as well as their perseverance during an unconventional end to their high school careers. The district wishes the graduates great success and fulfillment in the future and is confident that they will make positive contributions as they advance to the next chapter.

One of the phenomenal sailors onboard the USS Indianapolis (LCS 17) is Petty Officer 2nd Class John McCoy, a mineman. Prior to joining the Navy, McCoy graduated from West Babylon High School and attended the State University of New York at Oswego. There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral home do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increase in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 is now $1995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery. ONCE AGAIN, WE ARE TELLING YOU FOR YOUR OWN WELL BEING, IF THE FUNERAL HOME DOES NOT GUARANTEE ALL SERVICES, MERCHANDISE AND CASH ADVANCES - DO NOT PREPAY FORA FUNERAL UNLESS YOU SET ADDITIONAL FUNDS ASIDE TO PAY FOR ADDITIONAL INCREASES.
