Counting Chickens “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop

for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

West Babylon School District’s Class of 2018 celebrated their commencement exercises on the evening of June 22nd on the football field of the Junior High School. Surrounded by friends, family, board of education members and district administrators, the students marched onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance.” West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo welcomed the students and audience to the ceremony. “This class has developed a balance artistically, musically, athletically and academically,” she said. “You have shown determination and you have started many new traditions. You have shown kindness, compassion and empathy for each other and the West Babylon community. You have surpassed our expectations and I hope

classmates about failure. “Failure is an inevitable part of our lives and no matter what direction we decide, we should be ready to embrace it with open arms. Explore the road of failure because you can only learn from it.” During his salutatory address, Joseph Ronzetti offered words of inspiration. “The future of this class is very bright,” he said. “Our graduating class possesses many traits and talents. We are a class of athletes, musicians, actors and artists. These gifts

NYS Senator Phil Boyle presented three High School Seniors from the 4th Senate District with New York State Senate Youth Leadership Award Certificates of Recognition this week. The New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Awards invites schools across the State of New York to nominate a maximum of three junior or senior students for the program. “It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Rocco Longo and Britney Jahrmarkt from West Babylon High School and Brian Palacios Paz from Brentwood High School, for receiving the NYS Senate Youth Leadership Award,” said Senator Phil Boyle. “I am pleased to recognize these future leaders for their exceptional abilities and their determination to make a difference

in our communities. I encourage all students to find ways in which they can positively influence the lives of others both within their neighborhoods and throughout our state.” The New York State Senate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Awards program recognizes and honors outstanding students who possess the qualities to be a future leader. Nominations come from teachers, administrators, counselors, or other school faculty for well-rounded candidates who excel not only academically, but also through leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities. Proclamation Presented NYS Senator Phil Boyle was on hand with a proclamation as Babylon Town Officials honored Babylon resident, Samantha “Sam” Apuzzo, on being named the top female college lacrosse player in the Country. A three-year starter at Boston College, Apuzzo is the first BC Eagle to win the award in the history of the schools women’s lacrosse program. Sam led Boston College to an undefeated regular season and their second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance. Sam is the third in the nation in scoring and points scored, has 273 career points and, is well

on her way to becoming Boston College’s all-time leader in goals scored. Lacrosse, rooted in Native American tradition, is one of the oldest team sports in North America. Once called Tewaaraton, the game has taken many variations before reaching its present day form. Lacrosse participation in American colleges and high schools has surged since the 1960s, and The Tewaaraton Award, now in its 18th year, is annually bestowed upon the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. In essence, the Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse!

Despite cloudy conditions, spirits were high as the North Babylon High School’s Class of 2018 celebrated its commencement exercises on June 23rd. Surrounded by friends, family, board of education members and district administrators, the students marched onto the football field to “Pomp and Circumstance.” “The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed by senior members of the concert choir followed by North Babylon High School Principal Dr. Jonathan Klomp welcoming the audience to the ceremony. Supervisor Rick Schaeffer was also in attendance and offered words of encouragement to the soon-to-be graduates. Klomp and Assistant Principals Colleen Ligonde and Jeffrey Raymond shared some of the highlights and accomplishments of the Class of 2018 with the audience.
