Published Authors North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School students of Ms. Jodi Rebholz’s kindergarten class were all smiles on June 19, as they returned to their classroom and were surprised with the arrival of the books they recently published. Through a national student publishing program, all 24 students are now published authors after working collaboratively for eight weeks on crafting a book, which they’ve titled “Big Dreams by Little People.” They wrote and illustrated their own pages that described their dreams and goals for the future. Ms. Rebholz and their parents organized a publishing party and surprised the students with the arrival of their books. They all got up in front of the class and read their pages to their classmates. This idea came from the students after they began learning about the writing process. With that, they then researched, planned and contacted different publishing companies to find the one they would select. Students experienced firsthand what the publishing process is like by writing up drafts, revising, editing and finalizing their stories. They enjoyed working together on their book and are proud of their accomplishment.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! The top 25 students in the Class of 2019 at West Babylon Senior High School were honored for their accomplishments during the second annual Blue and Gold Breakfast with the Superintendent on June 18. Hosted by West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly and joined by district administrators, students were invited to celebrate

their achievements in the board of education room. The students were asked to choose a West Babylon staff member who has greatly impacted their educational career to join them as their guest for the breakfast. “Your character, resilience and perseverance shine through in everything you do,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “You have all excelled in the classroom, on the athletics

Eagle Scout Honored On Monday, June 24 Justin Baranovich earned the Rank of Eagle Scout at the age 15. Justin is a scout from Troop 2014 out of West Babylon. He is the 10th Scout for this new Troop of only 5 years. Justin’s Eagle Scout Project was Amazing! He called it “Wheels for

Kids.” Justin and his crew put together 5 Step 2 Wagons with IV Poles and donated them to St Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, Queens. Justin is the third Scout to earn the Rank of Eagle Scout in his family. His grandfather earned it in 1965 at the age of 17 and his uncle Bryan

Love For Foreign Languages Due to their commitment to learning foreign languages, several students from the Babylon JuniorSenior High School successfully completed the requirements toward earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, and were treated to a ceremony held in the Babylon Junior-Senior High School library. In order to qualify for this prestigious award, students had to complete their ELA Regents with an 80 or better, complete their 11th and

earned it in 1993 at the age of 16. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that a scout can receive, and requires the scout to earn 21 merit badges, complete a community service project, and undergo a lengthy review process.

12th grade ELA classes with an 85 or better and achieve a 3 or higher on their English AP Exam in Language and Composition. Their requirements for World Language (either Spanish or French) included an 85 or better in a Checkpoint C level language course (College Spanish or French), along with a project which included a scholarly essay at the ACTFL Intermediate High Level that they presented and defended to the foreign languages

committee. In Orlando, Erin competed in the Hotel and Lodging competitive event, while Kate took part in Restaurant Management. Both students were required to take an exam and participate in two role plays before judges in

their respective categories. Reilly and the students also participated in leadership events and attended opening ceremonies with inspirational guest speakers, a concert featuring Blue Man Group and corporate sponsorship events for internship opportunities. “This was an incredible learning opportunity for our students,” said Reilly.

Emily Fudim, a resident of Babylon, and a student at Hofstra University, was selected as the 2019 Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship recipient. Awarded annually by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its Communications Committee, the $2,000 scholarship was presented to Fudim at the group’s annual luncheon on June 7. Emily Fudim is a graduate student at Hofstra University studying Health Administration, where she maintains a perfect grade point average. She is also currently employed by two Long Island hospitals – Good Samaritan Hospital (West Islip) as an admitting clerk and as a flexstaff medical

secretary for Northwell Health, Southside Cardiology (Bay Shore). In May 2017, she graduated from James Madison University, where she studied communications and public relations. At James Madison, she was active in several community organizations, including her sorority’s Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Committee, which she chaired. In that role, she organized campus-wide fund raisers and events. Her work for this committee and other volunteer service for healthcare-related organizations prompted her interest in the healthcare field. When she completes her master’s degree, she plans a career

in hospital-based risk management or quality assurance. She hopes to put her communication skills to good use to improve patient relations, community relations, and healthcare policy. The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship has been awarded since 1994 and commemorates the late vice president for government and public affairs at the Hospital Council. Brown served in this role from 1983 – 1993. The scholarship is offered to a college junior, senior, or post-graduate student who is both a resident of Long Island and studies communications/ marketing, journalism, or health care administration.

Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District showed just how special and unique each individual student is during a ceremony in their rock garden on June 20. Last year, the school created the rock garden, modeled after the uniqueness of the book “Only One You,” which stresses how everyone is unique and has something

different to contribute to the world. Each student colored their own individual rock during art class. This year, the kindergartners and new entrants to the school were welcomed into Santapogue by creating their own rocks. One by one, each student added their own painted rocks to the garden. “There’s only one you in

this great big world,” said Santapogue Elementary School Principal Jennifer Carere. “Make it a better place. Not only are these stones a colorful addition to our school, they can serve as a daily reminder to students that no matter what, they’re special and that they have the power to change the world.”

Cooking Up Some Competition As a means of baking delicious treats and gaining real-world financial knowledge along the way, eighth-grade students enrolled in Jenna Schwartz’s Family and Consumer Sciences classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently participated in a fun and educational Food Truck Challenge. Once the business plan was complete, they met with their “investor” aka Ms. Schwartz, and pitched their food truck/company idea for approval. With their raw materials at their disposal, the students cooked and baked their signature dish in class and then plated their dish the following day for the

“selling day.” All teachers are invited to the classroom to vote on the best marketing scheme, along with choosing one product to purchase with mock currency. After the sales were made, the students counted their profit and paid back Ms. Schwartz for the initial “money” she invested. It’s a great project, and the students are not only learning so much along the way, but they are having a great time while doing it,” said Ms. Schwartz.
