How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials - resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Rhonda believed that even though EFF programs may be on hold, that did not mean the people of the community did not still need answers and help. She has worked endless hours for the sake of the families that need assistance and need a voice. Since the pandemic Rhonda has either spearheaded or collaborated in many projects to help our community out. Here is an example of just a few: The Grab & Go 3,000 Event in Patchogue: Rhonda collaborated with business owner of local restaurant to provide over 3,000 hot meals to families in need. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need. 6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night. PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. Miriam H. says, “Rhonda is a true professional that looks out for the best interest of her clients. She works hard at finding the best solutions and making her clients shine. Whenever referring a personal friend or client to Rhonda, I am confident in her ability to take proper care of them.” If you’re searching for somone to look out for you while guiding you through important financial decisions, Rhonda and EFF is the right choice. Babylon IDA Receives State Approval to Issue Small Business Loans and Grants Recognizing that local businesses continue to struggle in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has launched the Babylon Is Back Emergency Assistance Program. The program, recently approved by New York State, will provide temporary authority to the IDA to issue grants and loans to businesses and small not-for-profit corporations negatively

impacted by COVID-19. The IDA will provide the financial assistance through the Babylon Is Back Loan and Grant Program. “We thank our New York State Legislators as well as the Governor for acting on this important piece of legislation that provides the IDA with a new tool to continue supporting our local businesses get back on their feet,” said Matthew McDonough, the director of the Babylon

Is Back Program. “With small businesses being the backbone of our economy, their success is our success and we will not stop our efforts to deliver for them.” Under the program, the IDA will provide grants to small business and not-forprofit corporations located in the Town up to $10,000. The proceeds must be used for acquiring personal protective equipment or installing equipment necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part One Although we are referred to today as funeral directors, those individuals who direct funerals, we are also still referred to as “undertakers”. The term “undertaker” was derived from the concept that we “undertake” all that needs to be done for a funeral service. Whether we direct funerals or we undertake all the responsibilities for the funeral arrangements, we need your help in making the funeral a meaningful experience. Although we become an integral part of your family during the funeral process, we do not always know you or the deceased on a personal level when you first call us.

IDA has also made no interest loans, through the administration of the Babylon Is Back Loan and Grant Program, available to small businesses and small not-for-profit corporations located in the Town in an amount up to $25,000. To qualify for either a grant or loan, an eligible entity must establish that it was financially viable prior to March 7, 2020, the date, which Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Executive Order 202 declaring a disaster emergency. Eligible entities must also conduct business in the area served by the IDA, been negatively impacted by COVID-19, and have less than 51 employees. The IDA will consider the following factors in determining whether to award a grant or loan: • Creditworthiness prior to March 7, 2020 • Negative impact the shutdown has had on its operations and finances

Stepping Down After 26 Years As Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo has been a fixture in the West Babylon School District since she arrived in 1994. And she has certainly left her mark. Since that time, she has served as the principal of West Babylon Senior High School and has always put the needs of her students first. While her retirement is effective June 30, she will remain on board and serve as an interim principal for July and August until a new principal has been appointed. “I have worked with Dr. Vassallo for the past 14 years in West Babylon,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “Not only is she a dedicated administrator, but she always puts the needs of her students, staff and faculty first. She’s always been very supportive

of our vision for the district and is a valued member of the Suffolk County Principals Association and our superintendent’s management team.” “On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to extend our sincerest thanks for a wonderful 26-year career with West Babylon,” said Board of Education president Lucy Campasano. “Dr. Vassallo has shown dedication to our staff and students and has made many friends along the way. I will miss working with her. I wish her health and happiness in her retirement.” “Every time I have witnessed Dr. Vassallo make a difficult decision, she would ask herself, as well as those around her, ‘What is in the best interest of kids?’ The answer to that question would drive her mindset,”

said West Babylon Senior High School assistant principal Stephen O’Leary. West Babylon’s Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Shawn Hanley added, “Dr. Vassallo was always present at West Babylon Senior High School events. Dr. Vassallo always believed how important it was to show support for all your students in all activities, both instructional and noninstructional.” Dr. Vassallo started her career as an English teacher in Farmingdale Public Schools, where she stayed for 16 years. After receiving her administrative certification, she was appointed dean of students for the district. Next, Dr. Vassallo took her administrative career to Plainedge School District, where she served as an

assistant principal before coming to West Babylon. The Class of 2020 will be her 26th graduating class. “West Babylon has been my home away from home and my second family,” Dr. Vassallo said. “I will miss seeing students on a daily basis and my interactions with the staff. I am glad to have been a part of the community and the lives of all. It wasn’t just work.” Just because she is saying goodbye to her role as principal, it doesn’t mean you won’t see Dr. Vassallo involved with students. “For the future, I hope to be able to continue to contribute to education in West Babylon or other communities,” Dr. Vassallo said. “My husband and I may do some traveling when it’s less hazardous. I hope to have more time for grandchildren and family as well.”
