I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

A flashlight is an invaluable part of any disaster preparedness kit, and it’s a handy tool to have on hand in a car, at home or when traveling. You never know when you might need a flashlight, and it’s helpful to have many on hand. When stocking up on flashlights for emergency kits, choose ones with lightemitting diode, or LED, technology. While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.
