Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored North Babylon School District students Lauren Iudica and Layla Moncayo as his District winner and runner-up, respectively, of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drowning by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. Each year, one poster is selected from all of those

submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and Lauren and Layla’s were selected as the top two. Lauren received a County Proclamation and Layla received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement from Legislator Donnelly, who was joined by the students’ parents, teacher Ms. Lina Lenis, Principal Drew Olson and other North

Babylon school officials at the presentation ceremony, held at Parliament Place Elementary School on June 10. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is great way to remind and engage children about the importance of safety around swimming pools so they are truly able to just enjoy the fun of summer,” said Legislator Donnelly. “While there were many great entries, Lauren and Layla’s stood out, and I thank them for using their talents to help make this a safer summer for everyone.”

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and the North Babylon School District recently held the school district’s annual Art Show at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst. Suffolk County

Legislator Tom Donnelly was also in attendance. Each year, the North Babylon School District displays artwork from their students in grades K-12 throughout the Babylon Town Hall building. This year, they were unable to do so because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and instead, the

town worked in conjunction with the district to host a one-day event where the artwork was displayed on boards around the lake at Town Hall. The winner of this year’s Supervisor’s Art Award was 12th grader, Ivette Sanchez.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Earlier this year, Okodogbe published a children’s workbook, A Workbook Just For You, which contains material for any child between the ages of 1-7. From ABCs to 123s, the workbook covers all the basics of what a child needs upon entering school. Okodogbe skipped the 1st grade as a child and is now headed to college in

BABYLON VILLAGE HOSTS SECOND PRIDE PARADE - The second annual Babylon Pride Parade took place along Deer Park Avenue on Sunday, June 6th! Braving the heat were nearly one thousand spectators and parade participants, including Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams, Deputy Mayor Frank Seibert, Trustee Robyn Silvestri, and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso. The officials rode along the parade route in a float adorned with “Babylon Pride” with parade organizer Bob McKeown. Following the parade, several nearby streets were closed such that Pride festivities could continue within local businesses. In addition to the Village of Babylon and parade organizers, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce played an integral role in making the event a success. SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATORS ANSWER THE CALL FOR 911 DISPATCHERS - On Tuesday, June 8th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined his peers for a press conference pledging support for a piece of Legislation drafted by New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano. The bills intend to designate all civil service Public Safety Dispatchers, Emergency Responders, Emergency Operators, Emergency Complaint Operators, and Emergency Service Dispatchers in New York State as first responders. This designation would make them eligible for a greater array of benefits and training opportunities, all of which are more than well deserved. A TRIBUTE TO A TRUE COMMUNITY SERVANT - On Saturday, June 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined the Madden family for the rededication of West Belle Terre Avenue in Copiague as “Chris Madden Memorial Way.” Chris Madden was a true friend and community leader throughout the Lindenhurst and Copiague communities up until his tragic passing earlier last year after contracting COVID-19. He served in a number of community service oriented groups, including the Copiague School Board, American Venice Civic Association, Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and Copiague Chamber of Commerce- all of which continue to feel his loss. It is in Chris’ memory, though, that they continue to move forward, for the betterment of their communities and the lives of their neighbors.
