Cleaning Up The Environment On May 19, more than 40 students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Science National Honor Society participated in a beach cleanup at Gilgo Beach, under the supervision of adviser Andrew Sheltz and STEAM instructor Mary Beth Schappert. In addition to the benefit of accruing community service hours, the students eliminated a

large portion of broken glass fragments from the bay side beach - enough to fill two water cooler jugs - days before the ninth and 10th grade STEAM students and eighth grade Project Based Learning classes’ Carboard Boat Regatta. According to Mr. Sheltz, the broken glass which was collected will be polished and recycled into artwork by

future STEAM classes. In addition to perusing the water for debris, students also combed the beach for various pieces of garbage to be collected and properly discarded. “This is just another example of students in the Babylon community making the effort and taking the initiative to ensure a clean local CLEANING UP THE ENVIRONMENT - Student-members of the Babylon-Junior ecosystem,” Sheltz said. to school districts and the surrounding community by promoting local art and providing monetary awards for the winning entries. Additionally, it helps students build up their art portfolio, and allows the winners to claim publishing credit for their work when applying to art schools after graduation.

Supporting The ALS Ride For Life On May 14, staff and students from the Babylon Memorial Grade School showed their full support for ALS Ride for Life, as founder Chris Pendergast and his team paraded down the front of the school building to waves of cheers and rounds of applause. As Mr. Pendergast and his team made their way toward the front circle of the school, students held up posters and signs they made in class. Additionally, student-musicians representing the school’s

band and orchestra filled the air with sweet sounds of music to serve as a welcoming introduction. In order to further support ALS research, the school held fundraisers earlier this year such as Pajama Day, along with a highly successful WalkA-Thon which raised ALS awareness and collected donations for additional research funding. The district would like to thank Linda McGarvey, the secretary at the main office, for coordinating

this wonderful event which allowed ALS Ride for Life to safely pass through the Babylon School District. ALS Ride for Life was founded in 1997 by Chris Pendergast and his supporters. Each May, during ALS Awareness Month, those diagnosed with ALS ride their powered wheelchairs across Long Island to Manhattan in order to raise awareness of the disease, which currently has no cure.

weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income. After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in memorial garden. Calverton national Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that Mom has passed and now they need Dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place.
