Town of Babylon Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney, Councilman DuWayne Gregory and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello recently partnered with Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon’s office for free car seat safety inspections at the North Babylon
Fire Department. Suffolk County Legislator and firefighter Tom Donnelly was also in attendance. Studies show that three out of four car seats are used incorrectly, a contributing factor in automobile accidents being the leading cause of death in young children. Those in attendance were
shown the correct way to strap their children in to ensure their safety. The program will be offered again on Saturday, June 5 at the Amityville Fire House. Appointments are available between 9am and noon. Residents can register at the following link: https://forms.gle/ SmAgb2EPx89dYAhM6

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

First Business to Open as Part of the Town’s Storefront Development Pilot Program the way of helping MWBEs get access to the resources required to start and grow their businesses.” The Storefront Development Pilot Program launched in the fall of 2020 as a way to improve occupancy rates in underutilized business districts while also providing small business owners with affordable space needed to advance their businesses. Spin The Yard, a boutique store formally based in Huntington Station, has relocated to 1529 Straight Path Road in Wyandanch— the owner’s hometown— helping Mr. Certain’s business grow while also revitalizing a vacant and blighted storefront. Spin the Yard is more than a business as it also serves as an unofficial institution assisting financially and mentally struggling residents while supporting many other community initiatives such as helping distressed families and individuals coming out of prison. This communityfirst mentality is shared by
the program’s additional efforts to create the START Resource Center, also located at 1529 Straight Path Road. This center was launched to provide a multitude of transitional services for those with a history of incarceration, such as substance abuse treatment, transportation, educational opportunities, and jobs assistance. The START Center has been funded by a $40,000 grant from AT&T as well as a $25,000 Economic Inclusion Initiative grant from the Town of Babylon. “We could not be more honored with this opportunity to open up here in the Town of Babylon,” said William Certain, owner of Spin The Yard. “Many business owners are looking for a fresh start, and to be able to have access to these resources is a true blessing. We look forward to continuing being an example of this program’s success as well as stand ready to assist other businesses get involved for the betterment of our community.”

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. 1st PRECINCT BROTHERHOOD HOSTS MEMORIAL – On Thursday, May 13th, the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct Brotherhood hosted its annual memorial ceremony. The front lawn of the Precinct along Route 109 was adorned with a sea of American Flags blowing in the wind while Police Department officials payed homage to their fallen brothers and sisters. In addition to First Precinct patrol and specialized officers were representatives from police headquarters, local government officials, and the First Precinct Explorers- a youth organization for teenagers interested in serving their communities.
