Prom is a teenage rite of passage. Prom night provides one more exciting adventure in a school experience that likely started with preschool jitters and will soon culminate with graduates receiving their high school diplomas.

Set An Example By Keeping Calm Prom planning can be stressful. Various details have to come together on the big day. Even though they may appear to be young adults, teens still may have meltdowns or impulse control issues when things don’t go their way. Set an example by reacting to obstacles calmly and finding workarounds.

Prom night planning reaches a fever pitch a few weeks before the big event. A significant amount of time and money are involved in making prom a night to remember. While teens may be focused on fashion and fun, parents may be wondering what they can do to steer their sons and daughters in the right direction. Here are some pointers to consider as families prepare for prom. Set A Budget The pandemic has affected supply chains and has contributed to increased prices on all types of consumer goods, so you may find that prom attire and accessories will cost more this year. Figure out what you can afford to contribute to the prom, and ask your teenager to pitch in. If your child is footing some of the bill, there may be a greater willingness to corral spending. One way to save money is to rent a gown/tuxedo rather than

The Town of Babylon recently thanked the West Babylon Lions Club for hosting a food dive to benefit the town’s food pantry in North Amityville. When the organization heard that the pantry was in need of donations, the leaders sprang into action and began collecting food and other items. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Terence McSweeney and members of the Human Services Department were on-hand accept and thank the club for all of its efforts to keep the pantry stocked and supplied. The town food pantry operates by donation only and is located at the Department of Human Services, one Commerce Boulevard in North Amityville. The pantry accepts items year round and the most needed items include: peanut butter, jelly, tuna, canned vegetables, soup, pasta, sauce, rice and beans.

Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more

distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn lifesaving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision.

L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services non-proﬁt organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. They have been helping others for 93 years!

Little Flower has proudly adapted to address the unmet needs of those in their community by continuing to develop new programs and services. Their corporate headquarters and Suffolk County campus is still located in Wading River, however they also have a NYC campus, which is their ﬂagship ofﬁce in Brooklyn, along with ten residences across Queens and Long Island for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

“During the pandemic, Little Flower continued to operate without disruption to ensure the safety and well-being of hundreds of children in foster care, youth in residential treatment care, and adults with developmental disabilities. The Caring Acts Coalition will provide much needed support to those served by Little Flower, their families, our staff, and the local community,” shared Corinne Hammons, Little Flower’s President & CEO. In 2019, Little Flower expanded to welcome St. Johns’ Residence for Boys as an afﬁliate partner. Together with their dedicated volunteers, foster parent network, family care providers and other partners and supporters, Little Flower’s 600+ essential staff members provide foster boarding home care, residential treatment care, wrap around services for youth aging out of foster care, youth leadership development, adoption services, programs and services for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, along with medical and mental health services and coordination. During the months between graduating high school and beginning college, or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism. Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people. Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selfless acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. In the future, volunteering with an organization also may help with a student’s job search. There are many arenas where young people can focus their volunteer efforts. Here are some ideas. • Animal shelter: Animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with their operations. They can be a good fit for anyone with a passion for animals and animal rights activism. • Public service sectors: AmeriCorp and Peace Corps have scores of opportunities for volunteers. AmeriCorp focuses on domestic issues, while the PeaceCorp is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work. Community involvement, health

care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations. • English as a second language: Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping non-English-speaking individuals improve their language skills. • Community government: A person may choose to sit on the board of a school, a neighborhood housing association, or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. This will provide valuable hands-on experience and may help one lend a voice to issues that affect his or her living situation. • Religious groups: Churches, synagogues and mosques may have volunteer opportunities focused on community outreach or programs affiliated with local nonprofits. • Conservation groups: Volunteers can work on conservation projects across the country. From wildlife management to trail restoration to invasive species eradication, there are a wide variety of conservationbased volunteering opportunities. • Tutoring: Graduates can volunteer to tutor students in local schools or overseas. Volunteerism can fill gap years or add to résumés for recent graduates.

He opened a summer camp in Wading River that would eventually transition to a year-round residential treatment facility serving thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Kindergartners at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District had a special visit from K9 Officer Mark Sacco, his dog Bosco and two dogs in training. Students learned how K9s work to keep the community safe. The students hid objects from Officer Sacco around the playground and watched how Bosco was able to find

them all. Afterward, Detective Chiquitucto did a presentation to the kindergarten class about fingerprints. He is a latent fingerprint analyst with Suffolk County Police Department’s Identification Section. The class learned about the types of fingerprints people can leave behind. Detective Chiquitucto

showed the class how he is able to make fingerprints more visible by using different types of methods. The class watched him use two different types of fingerprint powder to see the characteristics of the fingerprints so he can use that information to match those fingerprints to people.

It would be an understatement to say that it has been an interesting few years for the Class of 2022. Due to the pandemic, many soon-to-be grads spent a significant portion of their school years adapting to a changing landscape, both at school and at home. While it is an accomplishment to reach graduation in a “normal” situation, students who have succeeded and thrived in the face of pandemicrelated adversity are worthy of extra celebration. Graduation gifts are a great way to show grads how proud you are that they stayed the course in the face of significant challenges. Here are seven gift ideas for graduates. 1. Journal: Graduates are about to start new chapters in their lives. Either a blank journal or one with writing prompts can help grads get their thoughts on paper to document both the many moments that will shape the next few years. 2. Mascot - or school - themed offerings: If a high school graduate will be going on to higher education, then visit the college or university’s spirit shop to purchase anything from sweatshirts to blankets to coffee mugs featuring a school logo or mascot. On the first day of classes, the new student will already feel part of the team. 3. New wardrobe: Graduating means forging new paths, whether in a career or through additional schooling. Vehicles tend to be major financial drains for teens and young adults. On Saturday, May 7th, Declan Davis of Troop 2014 in West Babylon received his Eagle Scout award in a ceremony at American Legion Post #94 in Babylon. For his project, Declan built two outside game tables for the patients of St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, a provider of long-term care to children with medically

complex conditions. Declan is also one of three Troop 2014 Scouts that will graduate in the top ten of their class next month at West Babylon Senior High School! On Friday, April 29th, Troop 398 and the Lindenhurst American Legion celebrated their newest Eagle in Ethan Xavier Lindenberg!

Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Kevin McCaffrey was joined by other officials at both ceremonies, including Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Terence McSweeney, and Ed Wiggins of New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s Office.

Flynn was chosen for his portrayal of Lumiere in “Beauty and the Beast” this past February. Flynn, along with 25 other high school females and 24 males, will attend coaching sessions in New York City with Broadway producers, casting and musical directors to prepare material.
