The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore.

If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). On Saturday, May 4th, from 11AM-2PM, the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control (DEC) will once again host an Earth Day Celebration at Town Hall Park. The event will feature information about the DEC’s multiple environmental initiatives, including stormwater management programs, the Geiger Lake Park redevelopment, and Babylon’s kayaking trails. In addition, there will be giveaways including 10 rain barrels, tote bags, pooper scoopers, key chains, water bottles, and clean energy displays, and be sure to bring the kids down, because there will

be an inflatable bouncing tent as well. Residents will also be able to recycle latex paint right at the event, where the paint that is generated will be blended into a nice gray color and will be offered free to residents to be used in their homes. A number of local students and teachers will be honored at this event. Winners of the Town of Babylon and Covanta Energy’s Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest will be announced, with over $3,000 in awards handed out to students who entered exemplary projects. Three elementary school students who won the Town of Babylon

Annual Earth Day Celebration DEC’s poster contest for a longtime science teacher who passed away this year will also be honored, in addition to a student planning to study the environment in college who was selected for a separate award in honor of a late employee of Covanta. Two local teachers will also be recognized for their commitment to teaching their students about the importance of environmental issues.
