Call for Artists The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) is hosting its Judged Art Show from Wednesday, May 30th through Thursday, June 14th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded in the following categories: Oils, Pastels, Portraits, Watercolors, Drawing, Mixed Media, Acrylics and in two Student

Categories: Students A (Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8) and Students B (Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12). The show is open to all Long Island and Metro artists. A new category has been added this year, Adult Student. This category will provide adults who are currently taking art classes with an opportunity to show their work along with their peers.

The judge for this show is Beth Giacummo. Beth Giacummo is an artist, arts activist, curator and educator living and working in New York. Mrs. Giacummo holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA in New Forms from Pratt Institute. As an artist, she has exhibited her work both regionally and internationally in venues

Laboratory Tour Sophomores enrolled in Claire Birone’s Science Research Class at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, along with Nick Radesca, treasurer of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, recently toured Stony Brook University Cancer Center’s lab facilities for an in-depth look into this engaging career path. While there, the students were able to meet two leading researchers, Marcus Seeliger, Ph.D.,

assistant professor of pharmacology and associate director MD/ Ph.D. Training Program, and Lori Chan, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacological sciences. Stony Brook Cancer Center’s affiliation with the Babylon Junior-Senior High School Research Program was facilitated by Stony Brook’s longstanding community relationship with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, to invest

in novel research and engage future scientists in the ecosystem of cancer research innovation at Stony Brook. “The students had a wonderful day and definitely got a lot out of the experience, and the researchers were really impressed by the knowledge and passion of our students,” said Ms. LABORATORY TOUR - Students enrolled in Claire Birone’s 10th-grade Science Barone. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Wasting time on activities that you don’t

enjoy may cause you to throw in the towel prematurely. Don’t base fitness choices around what worked for others; find things that work for you. Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start with an activity that you already enjoy, even if it’s aligned with the trend of the moment. Chances are you can find a class or make up a routine that works for you.

2. Tweak your playlist.

Music can improve performance during a workout and may actually take your mind off of strenuous or repetitive activity. Tunes also can be coordinated to the workout. Songs that feature lyrics such as run, punch, push or groove, can reinforce movements in the routine, offers the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Also, tailor songs to coordinate to the beats per minute of different activities. Strength activities and endurance activities can feature songs with higher BPMs.

Having other people around can make workouts more enjoyable, and that interaction may spur competition that can make you more inclined to stay the course. People who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports. Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.

Exercise regimens do not have to include running on a treadmill or lifting weights. All types of activities can work, and some may be more enjoyable to you than traditional exercises. Everything from martial arts to dance classes to volleyball can offer cardiovascular and muscle-building beneﬁts in a fun atmosphere.

Making exercise fun motivates many people to embrace ﬁtness and stick with their workout regimens.

You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming and cycling on natural courses can be

Cataracts are the most common eye problem affecting vision. It is estimated that there are about 2 million cataract surgeries in the US each year. The treatment of cataracts has evolved over the years and now we can offer excellent visual outcomes to our patients with minimal risk and low incidence of complications. Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when

driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or

contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and

most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. Our patients enjoy excellent vision after this low risk surgery. Of course, there is risk of complications and all precautions are always taken to ensure a successful outcome. Simple ways to kick bad habits Educating oneself about the consequences of unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, may compel people to overcome their bad habits. A 2015 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll found that people tend to be more judgmental of themselves than others when it comes to bad habits. Nearly seven in 10 Americans admitted they judge themselves more than they judge other people. Men and women who are hard on themselves when it comes to their bad habits may want to try some of the following techniques to break those behaviors:

Try something new. When trying to quit a bad habit, having something to do in its place can help. For example, men and women who want to spend less time staring at their devices or watching television can benefit from finding something healthy to do in the hours they would normally be spending online or on the couch. For example, adults may find joining a recreational sports league gets them out of the house on weeknights when they would otherwise be sitting at home watching television. Replacing something that’s perceived as a negative habit or behavior with one that’s considered positive can provide the motivation necessary to kick a bad habit. Figure out what’s triggering your bad habit. Another way to kick a bad habit is to understand what triggers it. Such an understanding can help people develop healthier reactions to the triggers,

ultimately eliminating the bad habit. For example, if stress at the office compels you to smoke a cigarette, you can prepare healthier ways to respond to that stress, such as walking around the office, than heading outside to smoke a cigarette. When necessary, speak to a psychologist about identifying triggers if you cannot identify them on your own. Educate yourself. Adults with especially harmful bad habits, such as excessive alcohol consumption or smoking, may find all the motivation they need to change their behaviors by educating themselves. For instance, smokers may be surprised to learn that, according to the U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services, more than 10 times as many American citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States combined. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause cardiomyopathy, arrythmia, stroke and high blood pressure. People may recognize that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are bad for them, but learning just how bad might provide the spark they need to change their ways. Breaking bad habits is seldom easy. But adults who commit to changing their ways can overcome even the worst of habits.

Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

As a means of promoting a firsthand cultural exchange experience, students enrolled in Melissa Anderson’s French classes at Babylon JuniorSenior High School recently welcomed 15 visitors from Paris, France to the school. The group, which was comprised of 12 students ages 11–13 and three

adults, spent two weeks visiting New York City before spending the last day of their trip in Babylon. Following a meet and greet session in the school’s library with the French Honor Society, additional students from Mrs. Anderson’s class joined the group for an informal question and answer session, along with

a short film presentation. The French visitors were then paired up with the Babylon students and shadowed their class schedule for three periods. During their time shadowing, the guests sang with the chorus, completed math equations and read poems together as a language exercise.

SPRINGING INTO ACTION - West Babylon Senior High School students from the National Honor Society and SEA Club worked with the West Babylon Main Street Organization during its annual spring clean up on May 12th. This year, students planted flowers, removed weeds, and cleaned up the grounds of the American Legion, Sgt. John Sardiello Post 1634. Parliament Visit Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District received a special visit from New York State Regent Roger Tilles. During his visit, he observed several classroom lessons and offered his

input to students and teachers, including Staci Manning’s fifth-grade class, where he was welcomed with a special Google Slide presentation about the importance of recycling and renewable and nonrenewable resources.

Regent Tilles’ visit was an opportunity for a member of the New York State Department of Education’s Board of Regents to see firsthand the high level of instruction and learning in North Babylon Schools.

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
