Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique. This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to ﬁnd beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selﬂess efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. If you are looking to make a difference right here on Long Island or if you are just looking for a special something, stop by the boutique located at 19 Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station and make a purchase! Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

BABYLON CENTRAL FIRE ALARM HONORS LONG TIME DISPATCHER - On the afternoon of Saturday, April 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Babylon Central Fire Alarm and Rescue Alarm Corporation and other local officials to recognize the achievements of long time Dispatcher Ronnie Kestenbaum. At 3:00pm that afternoon, Ronnie walked out of the Babylon Central office after his regular Saturday tour for the final time, marking the end of his more than 50 years of service to the Town of Babylon, its first responders, and its residents. As one of Babylon Central’s most senior staff members, Ronnie became known as a great teacher and role model for his fellow dispatchers, and is known throughout the Town for his calm demeanor- most notably in disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, several blackouts, and other massive firefighting operations. And as if 50 years behind the console wasn’t enough, Ronnie will continue to serve others with the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, where he volunteers. Town of Babylon Looking for Resident Feedback on Recreational Marijuana Sales Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board have opened a portal on the town’s website to receive resident feedback regarding the new recreational marijuana legislation recently signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Town Board cites the need to hear different perspectives from community stakeholders before deciding whether or not to opt out of the sale of the substance in the Town of Babylon. While the adult use of marijuana is currently legal across New York State, local municipalities will have the ability to block the sale of the substance within their borders. The Town Board must make its decision before the end of the year. If the town does decide to opt out at the end of 2021, it can opt in the following year. However,

if the town opts in at the end of 2021, they can no longer opt out at any time. “It was only a matter of time until we were forced with facing the legalization of marijuana in New York,” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “As we work toward a decision of whether or not to allow the sale of recreational marijuana within our borders, we feel its important to hear from our residents as there are strong, valid arguments on both sides of the debate,” he added.

Supervisor Schaffer, who also acts as Chairman of the Suffolk County Supervisors Association, regularly discusses options with his fellow town leaders across Long Island as well as the recently-convened New York State Office of Cannabis Management.
