The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Long Island Chapter Vice President and Public Relations Officer (Big D) at bigd@li-ny. bacaworld.org.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. “Mirror, Mirror On The Wall” Students at the Babylon Memorial Grade School viewed their reflections in a positive way due to the recently installed “Mirror Wall” which hangs on the school hallway for all to see. With assistance from technology teacher Danielle Weis, the wall was created not for vanity purposes, but so that

students begin to see themselves as a leader; harboring the qualities of a smart, empowered, determined, kind person with positive future aspirations. “Our goal is for students to look at themselves in a positive way and see their futures as bright and prosperous,” said Mrs. Weis. “I randomly selected

one student from grades 3-5 and those students had an opportunity to add splashes of color to mirror frames.” The frames now hang on the hallway for all to see, with the wonderful caption “Leader, Leader, on the wall, there’s a leader in us all!” lining the top of the installation.

EMT CERTIFICATION - West Babylon Senior High School student Alejandra Alvarado has achieved certification as a New York State emergency medical technician/certified first responder. EMTs are first responders in the event of medical emergencies. Alvarado has been a volunteer junior firefighter with the West Babylon Fire Department and has been an officer for the last two years. “Clean Up” The Ocean Floor Sixth grade students from the Babylon Memorial Grade School recently finished up their 10-week tenure in Heather Hosek’s STEAM Club, as they spent their time in the afterschool club reinforcing their skill sets in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. Coding with the popular “Ozobot” devices, the young engineers mapped out a series of lines or codes on a piece paper using specially designed markers which led the pathway for the small

devices. Their goal was to work collaboratively in an effort to clean up “debris” from the polluted ocean environments they created by using a number of arts and crafts materials. The underwater ecosystems were brought to life as the students added their own special take of sea urchins, nautical creatures and coral to their projects. The students were able to give the Ozobots commands such as “cruise,” “nitro boost” and “spin,” depending on how they colored in the

series of blocks on the prewritten line. As a means of troubleshooting their Ozobots’ pathway through the ocean floor, trial and error methods were utilized in the Ozoblocky computer program in order to successfully calibrate their robots. Working as a team, the students then fashioned various devices such as shovels and pullies which could easily be attached to the Ozobots in order to “CLEAN UP” THE OCEAN FLOOR - Sixth grade students enrolled in Heather clean up the “debris” from Hosek’s STEAM Club at the Babylon Memorial School worked on their nauticalthemed Ozobot project.
