Scouts Daniel Crean and Dean Chizzoniti spent their elementary school years working toward the rank, which marks a milestone and significant achievement in a Cub Scout’s growth. Hospital Association Offers Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2020. The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed

and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, please make a donation online at www. guardiansofrescue.org/donate.

Uplifting Community News!

A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are excited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon. With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

While the dinner table might be where families catch up and share stories of their day, breaking bread at breakfast time can be just as enjoyable. That’s especially true when families take the time to create homemade breakfasts, such as the following recipe for “Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries” from Susie Cushner’s “Sunday Brunch” (Chronicle Books).

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles 21⁄4 cups white whole-wheat flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 11⁄4 cups whole milk 1⁄2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 2 eggs, separated 5 teaspoons packed, grated orange zest

In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented

online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.

As the schools and students enter another week with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom

and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important.
