To celebrate Earth Day, the Town of Babylon (TOB) was proud to partner with National Grid to help spruce up the grounds of Anthony Sanchez Memorial Park in West Babylon. Town officials were joined by employees and volunteers to plant ﬂowers and shrubs, and spread mulch throughout the park. National Grid donated 70 eight-foot Leyland cypress trees as part of their Project C Commitment to Communities program that have been planted throughout the park. Cafeinspired works created by local artists will be on view at six coffee shops from May 26, 2022 until June 26, 2022. The 2022 Cafe D’Art Tour is supported by public funding provided by Suffolk County. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonprofit, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation. EOC of Suffolk promotes self-sufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders. While most of EOC’s work takes place in Suffolk County, the organization also provides a number of its services in Nassau County. Three of its initiatives that take place in both of those counties are: 1) The Housing Counseling program, which helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. 2) Its Developmental Disabilities work, which provides a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities – all aimed at enhancing their quality of life. 3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

vocational and educational growth. 2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. 3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs. 4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining beneﬁts, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing. 5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education. Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility. Babylon Grade School Joins Fight Against ALS Students at Babylon Grade School had a special visit from members of the ALS Ride for Life team during an assembly on April 13. ALS Ride for Life was founded in 1997 as a patient-driven, volunteer organization with the mission of raising research funds to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, while also raising awareness and services for those with the disease.

The organization has since raised more than $10 million On April 13, students and staff at Babylon Grade School wore pajamas to school to “Put ALS to Sleep” and collected donations for the organization. Paul Weisman visited the school to speak to the students about his disease and some of the challenges of ALS. Founder Chris Pendergast started the organization

with the mission of teaching people about the disease while riding all over Long Island. Since May is ALS Awareness month, members of ALS Ride for Life plan to ride again while stopping to visit schools across Long Island. Mr. Weisman reminded students in Babylon to “never give up, never lose hope and always be willing to defy the odds.”

Troop 399 Eagle Court Of Honor Jimmy White of North Babylon, received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor ceremony held on March 19, 2022, in North Babylon, NY. Jimmy’s scouting career began when he joined Cub Scout Pack 112 in 2010. He then joined Troop 399 where he has proudly served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Den Chief, and Patrol Leader for his troop. He has earned twenty-six merit badges during his time in Boy Scouts and many additional awards including the Parvuli Dei and Light of Christ religious Awards. He is Troop 399’s 67th Eagle Scout. The Court of Honor signifies a Boy Scout’s promotion to Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout is achieved through hard work, with the recipient required to have earned at least twenty-one merit badges, demonstrated leadership and had a positive impact on society. North Babylon Student A 2022 Coca-Cola Scholar The North Babylon Union Free School District is excited to announce that North Babylon High School senior Michael Fuentes has been named a winner in the 2022 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. He is among 150 students nationwide to be selected for this distinction and received a $20,000 college scholarship. More than 68,000 applicants and 1,617 semifinalists nationwide participated in the scholarship program. Michael earned the winning title after advancing to the regional finalist level of the competition and participating in a 20-minute interview with the program’s Regional Interview Committee. After showcasing his leadership skills, academic achievements and community service, Michael was officially selected as a 2022 Coca-Cola Scholar. The district is proud of Michael’s achievement and applauds his continued dedication to his academics and extracurricular activities.
