The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. “We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added. Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated. In addition to the banner, participants will receive a 4x6 print suitable for framing, a digital version for sharing on social media and the opportunity to share their Hometown Heroes’ story to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis website. BACCA on the Arts Serving the Town of Babylon, NY Old Town Hall • 47 West Main Street • Suite 4 • Babylon, NY 11702 www.babylonarts.org •info@babylonarts.org 631-587-3696 The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is highlighting the art works of Town of Babylon residents and the stories behind these artists which will be featured regularly in the South Bay’s Neighbor. In commemoration of Memorial Day, it begins its series with the works of Edward Stephenson Bates, a World War II veteran, devoted father, and celebrated painter who lived in Deer Park until his death on January 29th, 2021. The article was written by Jason Jenkins, BACCA Program Coordinator. Edward Bates fully immersed himself into the art world. He began by managing the distribution of fabrics between international textile companies and would also pick up working as an illustrator for women’s wear. Although he displayed an early talent and interest in visual arts as a child, winning Bamberger and Scholastic awards at age 12, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that Bates received a set of oil paints from his uncle and embraced oil painting as his main artistic medium. Bates’ first oil painting, Gaucho, was painted at such a level of artistic maturity and craft comprehension that one would have to question if he did not train with the Renaissance master El Greco himself. In no way was this a mark of beginner’s luck; Bates’s artistic talents were selftaught and consistently nurtured through everything he achieved. For example, his aviation mechanical training surely served as a foundation for his technical precision in portraiture, creating a style that functioned comfortably between realism and the limitless sublime. Whether it was from watching boats sail along the Atlantic City Bay or sailing himself, Bates would inherit the essence of the sea which he instilled within his portraits of historical and cultural figures whose faces would shine with the fluid vitality of the ocean.

Two Girls from Benin, 22 x 24, oil Mr. Bates was truly a communal man and in addition to exhibits at the annual Brooklyn Fulton Street Art Fair, Brooklyn Museum and US Supreme Court, Bates took part in countless others as an active member of the Fulton Street Arts Consortium and the 20th Century Creators. This nationally acclaimed artist would later move to Long Island with his daughter, settling in Deer Park, where he continued to participate in community and arts council activities. He was also a member of the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Bates’ commitment to his craft, culture, and multiple communities found him highly celebrated throughout life, and especially on Long Island – notably in 2013 by the Town of Babylon for his contribution to cultural history, and in 2014

for his one-man career retrospective show at the Conklin House. Edward Stephenson Bates lived his life to such a high degree that every entry of his story can be read as poetic fate. The culmination of his life’s work reaches beyond just historical contribution because his life, being one of boundless love, dedication, and talent, allows him to break through temporal barriers with an eternal reach, inspiring all who encounter his story and work. The Town of Babylon will name a section of Carll’s Path between Tell Ave and Cara Court on June 5th in honor of our local artist and veteran, Edward Bates, on the 96th anniversary of his birth. While his training group’s entry into the aviation school was historically significant, those unfortunate circumstances prevented him from serving on an aircraft carrier. Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. There are 7 various sponsorship opportunities, ranging from $3,000 to as little as $100. All proceeds will go back to support the mission of Contractors For Kids. However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Helen Keller Services Hosts Virtual 5k Fundraiser Second Annual Helen’s 5k Run Walk. Ride. 2021 Goes Online Helen Keller Services (HKS), a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit offering programs and services through its two divisions: Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) and Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB), today announced it will host its Second Annual Helen’s 5K Run. Walk. Ride. Virtual Fundraiser online from through May 9, 2021. Participants can register to run/walk/ride, and/or

assist with fundraising by creating their own personal Individual or Team Helen’s Run.Walk. Ride. Fundraising page at https://events.elitefeats. com/hks21. “While we cannot be together in person this year, we invite you to join us virtually to be a part of this year’s fundraising campaign,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of HKS. “Whether it is indoors or outside in the fresh air while running,

walking or riding the 5K, there are many ways to participate, support and stay connected.” Last year was the first year HKS could not have an in-person event in over 30 years. Nonetheless, the event was a big success, which included participants from Maine to Hawaii. This year the event seeks to raise $30,000 and to reach an even broader audience. Proceeds from this year’s fundraising campaign

will enable HKS to assist individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have a combined hearing and vision loss to receive equal access to opportunity. The 5k Run. Walk. Ride. seeks to Break Down Barriers to Independence, Build a More Inclusive Society and Bring Inner Capability Out. Participants register online and then record their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run,

participants update their time on the website for credit. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety of prizes, including TD Bank and Nike gift cards in amounts ranging from $500 to $100. Full details are online.
