May is truly a drag for the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus (LIGMC) – but in the best possible way. Hair, heels, attitude and song will fill the Babylon American Legion on Saturday, May 12th when chorus members – some performing in their most inspired fancy dress – will take the stage for the “May’s a Drag” cabaret. May’s a Drag

Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught
off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of
course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Capital Visit Eighth-graders from Babylon-Junior Senior High School recently attended an overnight field trip to Washington, D.C. with a focus on visiting historical sites that are critical to their U.S. History curriculum. During the two days of touring, the students visited the Lincoln Memorial, the spot were Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech,
the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial and the World War II Memorial. Additionally, all in attendance took an indepth tour of the Holocaust Memorial Museum as well a tour of Arlington National Cemetery, where they witnessed a changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “The students did an amazing job asking questions and discussing
history as we visited each site,” said Babylon JuniorSenior High School Assistant Principal Jennifer Mangone. “To see our students so deeply engaged in history was such a thrill and we are very excited to make this experience an annual one for our eighthgraders.” The trip was organized by social studies teacher Christopher Skaar and the eighth-grade team of teachers.

Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement or their own financial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their first paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer.

A list of all persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available for inspection by qualified voters of the District in the said Office of the Clerk on each of the five (5) days prior to the day of election, except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., prevailing time and shall be available at the polling place on the day of the vote. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Any such written challenge shall be transmitted by the District Clerk or a designee of the Board of Education to the inspectors of election on Election Day during all hours of voting and registration. The District Clerk shall be at Election District No. 1. The award was presented by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Award. At the awards ceremony in late March, the two
students were presented with certificates and gold medals recognizing their outstanding achievement as physical education students, scholars and citizens.

Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a
difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so.
