Community Editorial: The Importance of Spaying & Neutering Your Pet Spring: A time of renewal and rebirth. The time of year when we know things will get better. Sadly, spring is also a time when millions of unwanted puppies and kittens are born. According to AnimalsAbused.org, there are approximately 70,000 puppies and kittens born in the United States each day. One pair of cats can produce 420,000 offspring in seven years! (that would be from the kittens they have, the kittens their offspring produce, etc.). One pair of dogs can produce 60,000 offspring in six years. This results in a lot of unwanted puppies and kittens who will likely end up in a shelter. The ASPCA estimates

that 6.5 million unwanted pets enter shelters each year. Of this number, approximately 860,000 cats and 670,000 dogs are euthanized. Most of these animals are young

Finally, if you want to bring a pet into your home, first stop should be your local animal shelter or rescue rather than spending thousands of dollars for a “designer” dog or cat. Shelters and rescues have hundreds of loving animals who are hoping to be adopted into their “fur-ever” home. The

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

The Babylon School District would like to extend sincere congratulations toward Babylon JuniorSenior High School student Agnes Goldin for receiving a $5,000 scholarship through Distributive Education Clubs of America in partnership with Hilton based on a submitted application and excellent performances during DECA competitions. Agnes is one of only three students from New York State to receive a DECA scholarship this year, as

DECA and its corporate partners awards more than $300,000 annually in scholarships to students across the nation. Additionally, she is the first Babylon student to have ever received this prestigious award. She will be accepting her award at the International DECA Career Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida on April 30. Agnes has been a member of DECA for four years, maintaining the role as and president for the past two years. She

has been a voting delegate at the New York State DECA Career Conference for four years and was also on the nominations committee during her sophomore year. In addition, Agnes qualified for the International DECA Career conference for three of her four years at Babylon JSHS. “I could not think of a worthier recipient for this award,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School DECA adviser Claire Reilly.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Coping with an Empty Nest Many people find it rewarding to start a family and raise children. Watching kids grow through the years and sharing in their experiences can bring life to a household. Mothers spend 18 years or more devoted to their children, and often their identities are defined as “Mom” above all else. Babylon “Rocks Their Socks” In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day which takes place annually on March 21, staff and students from the Babylon School District recently came together to host a “Rock Your Socks” event which celebrated the unique qualities that everyone brings to school on a daily basis.

This year, the Babylon School District partnered with Café Europa, who created sock-shaped pizzas for the special day. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the pizza sales were donated to the Babylon Buddies, who in turn will donate the proceeds to The Association for Children with Down Syndrome.

The date for WDSD was strategically chosen to take place on the 21st day of the year’s third month, as it signifies the uniqueness of the trisomy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. This day of awareness has been recognized by the United Nations since 2012.

PUNS WITH POETRY - Students of all grade levels from Babylon Elementary School were recently paid a visit from renowned children’s poet Darren Sardelli for an informative presentation regarding the importance of keeping a creative mind while writing their own pieces of work. During his visit, Mr. Sardelli recited a number of his original poems from memory, infusing witty literary elements with humorous punchlines which in turn brought upon instant laughter to all in attendance. students rehearsed a performance for Councilman McSweeney, which they later performed for other students in the building. The performance consisted of students singing songs and reciting poems that reflected the theme of the day.

There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750.00 and $3000.00, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355.00 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755.00-to $2300.00. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have swerved that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs.
