While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

It’s much easier to us to talk to you directly about your pet’s health.

The government has lifted restrictions where it is essential to get other parts of the economy restarted, but we don’t expect to see change for a while on safety measures like curbside check-in that have been seen to be effective.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The

pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Recently, CFK helped a 12 year old boy who suffered from a traumatic brain injury. He is now blind and he has a history of Wilm’s tumor and craniotomy, among many other complications. This little boy was put into the foster system and was adopted by the nurse that fostered him. CFK was able to provide them with a special chair to hold him, car payments and rent! Additionally, they assisted a 6 year old girl with Fibromatosis soft tissue sarcoma who lives in Holbrook. Due to intensive Chemo treatments, her mom had to stay home with her. CFK helped with several month’s mortgage payments, water and electric bills, as well as car payments to help keep this family afloat during difficult times! So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Painting Potential Pets Students at Babylon High School recently volunteered to paint portraits of the cats and dogs awaiting adoption at Babylon Animal Shelter. This project was coordinated by senior Allie Van Rossem, whose own experience adopting a pet inspired her to help others do the same. The students’

finished portraits have now been posted on each animal’s cage at the shelter to capture the attention of potential adopters and help the animals find their “forever homes.” Once an animal is adopted, its new owner will be able to take home the portrait as a special keepsake.

Girl Scout Troop 2440 Thank Healthcare Heroes an idea that they felt would recognize and thank Healthcare Heroes for all of their hard work during the Covid pandemic. The Girl Scouts have developed a relationship with The Bristal in West Babylon and decided to create mask lanyards for the Healthcare Heroes that work there. Despite not being able to have traditional meetings, each of the girls created lanyards independently and during virtual meetings. They also organized virtual meetings with younger girl scout troops and taught

other girls how to create lanyards. Troop 2440 has worked hard encouraging other girl scout troops to create lanyards and to recognize the helpers in our community. After months of planning and work, girls in Troop 2440 were excited to be able to deliver the mask lanyards to the Bristal. Each of the girls dedicated a minimum of twenty hours of time to this cause before being able to participate in this delivery. Together they were able to deliver 100 mask lanyards.

Sixth grade students at Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon are using what they learned in their language arts classes to become comic strip artists. Students in Mrs. Nocella’s classes recently finished reaching “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan.

As a culminating activity, the sixth graders created a comic strip through the Storyboard That program. Students identified various plot elements of the book including exposition, conflict, rising actions, climax, falling actions and

resolution. They then turned their discussions and the storytelling elements into a visual. The comic strips gave students a different perspective into what they learned and helped them realize how well they mastered the material.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. “We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added. Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated. In addition to the banner, participants will receive a 4x6 print suitable for framing, a digital version for sharing on social media and the opportunity to share their Hometown Heroes’ story to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis website.
