Recognizing Your Life Cycles You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. Wherever you are right now; the people who are around you, the places you frequent, your relationship status, financial status, health status... even the area in which you reside are all outward projections of your inner world and your current stage of development. In the blink of an eye you could find yourself doing a slow circle turnabout as you wonder, “Whoa! How did I get here? My world has done a sudden 180.” It’s as if you have taken a quantum leap, but that leap has actually been a long time in the making. It is a result of your personal life cycles. I know what you are thinking. “That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the

year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way. Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.” We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards. We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

Martinez and McSweeney thanked Arthur for his service to his community and congratulated him on the great honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. At the ceremony, Arthur presented Deputy Supervisor Martinez with an Eagle Mentor Pin for helping him throughout the process of becoming an Eagle Scout. Arthur’s Eagle Scout Service Project was the repainting and restoration of several rooms at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Arthur is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 179 in West Islip.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

County Legislature Visit North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School’s Student Council met with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly during their monthly Student Council meeting on April 3. Students discussed

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite

This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! In recognition of the Council for Art Education’s Youth Art Month, students enrolled in both Patricia Stork’s and Cheryl Schweider’s art classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School are taking part in a series of fun and engaging art projects. During lunch periods, students were encouraged to assist in painting a community-driven “paint by numbers” canvas. The finished product will display a beautiful field of flowers once all of the designated sections have been filled in.

In an effort to enhance their familiarity with film photography, students worked on a project in which they take a photo of a fellow classmate, along with an object of their choosing. Taking the negatives from both photographs, the students then merge the two together to form a beautiful layered image. In coordination with “The Umbrella Project,” students expanded their artistic visions by adding splashes of color and imagination to blank umbrellas. The students

chose to create designs such as dragons, the moon and the sun and geometric shapes for their projects. In honor of the Babylon School District’s Panther logo, the students also created a large sculpture in the image of the exotic feline. As an added twist, those involved with the project have added old computer parts, such as loose keys throughout the length of its body, along with computer mice serving as the panther’s paws.

DECA Competition Forty-five Babylon Junior-Senior High School students enrolled in the Distributive Education Clubs of America recently competed among 2,300 high school students from across New York State at the 59th annual New York DECA State Career Conference on the weekend of March 5. During their time spent at the conference, the students were able to amass a vast number of awards and accolades based on their efforts. Babylon’s chapter received the Community Service award for contributions to the New York DECA charity of the national Alzheimer’s Association. Additionally, eight Babylon students were inducted into the New York State DECA Honor Society for academic and DECA achievement. The district congratulates Kyra DeVoe, Abigail Erickson, George Glenday, Catie Hernandez,

Lauren Jurs, Julia Kelleher, Madeline Stein and Kate Watral. A number of students also won the following top 10 awards and trophies: Erin Corcoran (Hotel & Lodging: Top 10 Role Play 1, Top 10 Role Play 2, Top 10 Overall, third place in New York State, $500 Scholarship from Johnson & Wales); Kate Hannon (Quick Serve Restaurant Management: Top 10 Test, Top 10 Role Play, Top 10 Overall, fifth place New York State); Lauren Jurs and Erin Conlon (Hospitality Services Team Decision Making: Top 10 Test, Top 10 Role Play, Top 10 Overall); Catie Hernandez (Business Services Marketing: Top 10 Test, Top 10 Role Play, Top 10 Overall); Kristen Szuchy (Restaurant & Food Service Management: Top 10 Test, Top 10 Role Play 1); Meghan Nachemin (Hotel & Lodging: Top 10 Test); Megan Burke (Restaurant & Food
