North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. Four seniors from the North Babylon High School had their talents displayed this past month during the GO APE 13 Annual AP High School Student Art Exhibition.

Students included Trinity Darbouze, Casey Losinski, Sara Madsen and Nicoletta Notaridis. This is the second year students from North Babylon represented the

district in this event. The district is proud of the efforts these they demonstrated for the exhibit.

Telehealth Is Available Through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy Telehealth is a new resource available through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy for anyone that needs therapy and wishes to receive the treatment in the comfort and safety of their own home. Telehealth offers a web based therapy session that is done via a webcam. Phones, tablets, or computers can be used. The sessions are private and the only people that have access to the video call are the patient and the treating therapist.

Telehealth is available for any body part or condition, and is covered by insurance. While we navigate the challenges COVID-19 presents, under most insurances Metro Physical Therapy is able to waive any copayment associated with the treatment. This means sessions are available at no out of pocket cost to the patient in most cases. In the event a copayment can not be waived, a second session in the same week is being

Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith.

An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains.

Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body.
