The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Eagles Go Bald Students and staff members from throughout the West Babylon School District shaved their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise money for childhood cancers. The Bald Eagles of West Babylon raised more than $10,000 on March 25th at Lily Flanagan’s Pub in Babylon Village. This is the third year the Bald Eagles participated in the event and for the past two years, they have been the top fundraising team. More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island. This year’s winners are Miguel and Abby Melendez of Baldwin, New York. In the ten years they have served as volunteers, they have actively participated in Relay For Life, supported Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the

Move More Month Staying active is a nobrainer when it comes to improving how you look and feel, yet according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 56.1% percent of New York State adults are getting the recommended amount of aerobic physical activity. This month the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is challenging everyone to get moving. Move More Month is part of the association’s Healthy For Good™ movement, which inspires people everywhere to make lasting changes in their health and their lives, one small step at a time. “The human body was designed to move,” said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, American Heart Association’s chief medical officer for prevention. “Your body thanks you for moving by relieving anxiety, depression and even anger, and rewards you by making your brain and heart stronger.” Not only can moving more help improve selfconfidence, energy levels and sleep quality, those who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese.

People are encouraged to share how they’re moving more in April by using the hashtags #HealthyForGood and #MoveWithHeart on social media. According to the American Heart Association, just 150 minutes a week of activity that gets your heart pumping and leaves you a little breathless can provide major health benefits. The American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement encourages everyone to get moving with the following tips: Work it… at Work – Whether you work in an office, at home or behind the wheel, chances are you spend a lot of time sitting. Not enough time to move? Try moving more while you perform routine tasks. Start by taking one weekly meeting to go by walking while you meet. Other options include taking the stairs more often, parking farther out or taking stretch breaks throughout the day. Play with Fido – Most pet owners will tell you that having a pet can relieve stress and boost overall happiness. But did you know that people who walk their dogs are more likely to get the recommended amount of physical activity than those who don’t. According to one study, dog-walkers got an average of 30 minutes more exercise a day than

non-walkers. Make it a Family Affair – You don’t need to break the bank to move more with your kids. There are numerous tips to keep your family active on the cheap. And if the weather is bad or outdoor activities are out of the question, try dancing, playing or cleaning indoors. Want to get out? Go for a walk around the mall or check out recreation centers in your neighborhood. Bust a Move Anywhere – The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. That can be accomplished by taking small activity breaks, setting reasonable expectations and finding a move more buddy. Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are invited to meet with LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker and tour the campus at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset. Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art studio, participate in a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and experience much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with the expert faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff. Interested students can also learn about Summer Arts Academy for grades 6-12. As part of their professional-level training, LIHSA students regularly receive one-onone access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel; actor and director Ralph Macchio; legendary frontman Eric Bloom, of the classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company; sculptor Frank Porcu; and worldrenowned violinist Patrick Yim, to name only a few. They also perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker

magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines, and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered

at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual Open House to showcase the school’s programs, as well as the talent our students possess.
