Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. The Differences Between Organic And Inorganic Mulches

The benefits of mulch are widely known among lawn and garden enthusiasts. By insulating soil from extreme temperatures, helping soil to retain moisture and preventing weed growth, mulch can help plants, trees and gardens thrive, even during periods when Mother Nature can make that very difficult. Novice gardners may find themselves a little confused when visiting a lawn and garden center to purchase mulch. That’s because there are various types of mulches. One of the ways to simplify that is to break mulches down into two main classes: organic and inorganic. Learning to distinguish between these two classes can help homeowners choose the best mulch for their properties.

Organic Mulch Organic mulches are made up of materials that decompose over time. The experts at BobVila.com note that, because they decompose over time, organic mulches must be replenished on a regular bais. Hardwood and softwood chips are among the most popular and recognizable organic mulches. Evergreen needles, leaves, grass clippings, and compost mixes also fall under the organic mulch umbrella. Many gardening enthusiasts prefer organic mulches because they help soil retain moisture, improve soil fertility and help to deter weed growth.

Gravel, brick chips and crushed stone are examples of inorganic mulches. The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

Fundraising is also a very significant part of UCP, as it is with just about any other nonprofit organization. However, United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is one of the most fiscally responsible agencies on our island because 92 cents of every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. In addition to helping those with cerebral plasy, they currently are serving those with:

Five West Babylon Senior High School DECA members – Michael Capriola, Sabrina Catapano, Olivia Golebiewski, Megan Le and Emily Villarreal – competed at the annual New York State DECA Career

Arbor Day Foundation Names Village of Babylon Tree City USA The Village of Babylon was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Ceremonial Groundbreaking For The Winters Centers For Autism On Thursday, April 2, World Autism Day, the Winters Family Foundation will break ground on the 14,000 square-foot Winters Center for Autism at 9:45 a.m. at 92 Mahan Street, West Babylon. The new state-of-theart facility will include vocational and life skills teaching areas, a high-tech conference and education meeting room, recreational spaces for health and wellness activities and a community café providing a welcoming environment for program participants and the community. The Center will help to create jobs and provide job placement services for people with autism. The Center will

also assist caring Long Island employers develop and implement job-training programs for adultswith autism. Featured events and speakers include: • Mr. Joseph (Joe) Winters, Winters Family Foundation President • The Honorable John Flanagan, United States Senate • Mr. Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive • Mr. Rich Schaffer, Babylon Town Supervisor • Mr. Chris Cortale, Autism Advocate • Refreshments following groundbreaking.

Joe Winters, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Winters Bros. Waste Systems is a key leader in fundraising for the project along with the Winters Family Foundation. Joe and his wife, Michele, along with the entire Winters family are strong advocates for high-quality services and opportunities for individuals with autism. Joe believes that jobs provide people with a sense of fulfillment and purpose. His vision is to create this Center with the goal of enhancing the quality of life and providing a sense of fulfillment for adults with autism through job creation, training and placement.

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta recently hosted local business owners at the American Legion Post 94 for the first installment of the three-part Small Business Seminar Series he is holding this year. Councilman Manetta, in partnership with the Farmingdale State College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and United States Small Business Administration (SBA), welcomed over 100 local business owners to come learn about the government bidding process for winning government contracts. Town Clerk Gerry Compitello was also in attendance.

“I’d like to thank everyone who attended our seminar on ‘How to Become a Government Contractor,’ in addition to the folks at the SBDC and SBA for their informative program and our friends at the American Legion for their hospitality,” said Councilman Anthony Manetta. “As Chairman of the Town of Babylon’s Small Business Committee, it was great to see such an impressive turnout of business owners who want to take their operations to the next level,” he added. The program covered several key topics, including where to look for opportunities for contract work with the New York State, New York City,

County-level and Town of Babylon governments, how to prepare for those opportunities by checking their eligibility for certifications and the most efficient way to respond to government solicitations. The next installment of the Small Business Seminar series will take place on Thursday, April 16th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village, and will cover how local businesses can apply for New York State Minority Woman-Owned Business Enterprise certification. Law On Who Controls Your Funeral

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral, speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content.
