The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an inﬂuential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

Students Represent North Babylon In Prestigious Parade North Babylonâ€™s Robert Moses Middle School Marching Band were proud to march in the Garden City St. Patrickâ€™s Day Parade on March 1, where they performed â€œIâ€™m Shipping Up to Bostonâ€?

arranged by Paul Murtha. This is a very prestigious parade and is one of the oldest parades in Long Island. This is the bandâ€™s 12th year performing in this event, where they previously won

the Chancellorâ€™s Trophy nearly eight years ago. The Marching Band along with Kickline and Color Guard were very honored to be a part of such a wonderful parade.

Mattresses For Music Band, chorus and orchestra students at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently held a fundraiser that could put one to sleep. They sold mattresses in the auditorium to the

community to raise money for Babylon Schools Friends of the Arts. Thirtytwo mattresses were sold overall, raising an impressive $4,270. The money will go toward sending the students

to this springâ€™s â€œMusic in the Parksâ€? festival in Hersheypark, where they will get the unique opportunity to perform their repertoire of songs and represent their school on a national stage.

Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG Long Island.” More than

6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since 2018, that number is down to 5%.

“Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a past-due bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations, PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate

payment and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include pre-paid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment, they will receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.” What to look out for You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID.

PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask for them because they are untraceable. What to do Hang up. Do not provide any personal or account information. Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. Never call any number the scammer gives you. What PSEG Long Island will and won’t discuss over the phone A genuine PSEG Long

Island representative will ask to speak to the Customer of Record. If that person is available, the representative will explain why they are calling and provide the account name, address and current balance. If the Customer of Record is not available, the PSEG Long Island representative will not discuss the account at all and ask that a message be left for the Customer of Record to call 1-800-4900025.

Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area

of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

many prestigious prizes and awards which include Third Prize at both the International Senigallia Piano Competition in Italy and the International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, Second Prize in the International Vincenzo Bellini Competition in Caltanissetta, Italy, First Prize in Long Island’s Five Towns Competition, and a Diploma at the Grieg Competition in Oslo,

Norway. Mr. Anikushin will perform works by Soler, Beethoven, VillaLobos, Chopin, Liszt, Ponce, Prokofiev and Lecuona. The music will begin at 3 pm. BABYLON TOWN OFFICIALS CONGRATULATE NEW EAGLE SCOUT Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terry McSweeney to honor Jacob Martin of Boy Scout Troop 399, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor ceremony was held for Jacob at North Babylon High School, where the officials congratulated him on his achievement and wished him the best in his future. For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob doubled the beehive capacity of the apiary at Homecoming Farm in Amityville to support the farm and neighboring ecosystem.
