BABYLON BREAST CANCER COALITION, INC. (BBCC) AWARDED FUNDS - On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at a special press event, N.Y.S. Attorney General Letitia James announced that five nonprofit breast cancer organizations selected by her office will be awarded funds obtained from a recent settlement. The funds were raised by sham organizations defrauding donors hoping to donate towards breast cancer charities. Long Island’s Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (BBCC) is one of the fortunate recipients. BBCC is a grass roots, Babylon Township based charity that had a humble start in 1993 when three friends, two of them diagnosed with breast cancer, felt they could no longer ignore the statistics. Today the BBCC provides a wide variety of free services and support for Babylon Township residents undergoing active treatment for breast and gynecologic cancers. Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

This award supports Options housing programs for homeless individuals and families living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratiﬁed when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

The program is set to kick off in the spring and will run as an eight team league, where each school will play every other school once for a seven game regular season. I can’t wait for the Spring 2022 season to begin.”

The North Babylon Union Free School District has been selected to participate in the New York Jets High School Girls Flag Football League’s pilot program this spring. High School student-athlete Juleesah Hines, a senior, and district officials represented North Babylon schools and attended a launch event for the program at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 1. The New York Jets made the announcement that they are expanding the Jets High School Girls Flag Football League on Feb. 2, in honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. There will be 16 schools across Long Island in the league. North Babylon is one of eight Suffolk County schools selected for this initiative, which is being sponsored and supported by Nike, the New York Jets, NYSPHSAA and Section 11. Mural Makes Global Connections Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently participated in the 2021 Global Traveling Mural project. Every student in the school made their mark on the “We Are Forest Avenue School” mural. This is Forest Avenue’s first year participating in the traveling mural project. The school chose a theme that best represents them: Long Islanders, diverse, trustworthy, respectful, proud, fair, responsible, perseverant, good citizens and caring. Each of the 10 pillars are sprinkled with additional symbols as well as unique and special qualities that are found at Forest Avenue Elementary School. The traveling mural project connects with school communities

around the world to create murals of peace, friendship, diversity and love. The theme and design of the mural created is unique to each school. Once registered for the project, Forest Avenue was connected with 10 other schools, libraries or classrooms. The murals are all created on 10-footlong butcher paper and can be designed using paints, crayons, markers or pencils. When their project was complete, the mural was cut into 10, 1-foot-long pieces and sent to the nine places on their list. Forest Avenue kept one piece of the mural and during the course of several weeks, they received nine additional pieces from around the globe to create their new traveling MURAL MAKES GLOBAL CONNECTIONS - Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School community mural.
