It was a night of celebration at the North Babylon School District Board of Education meeting on February 15th, as students, educators and visiting family members took a closer look at the wonderful accomplishments of this year’s English as a New Language program.

Director of ELA/ENL K-12 Dana Musso led a presentation that took a step-by-step tour of the programs that students in second, 11th and 12th grade have gone through this school year. Students from both age groups shared excerpts from their essays with those in attendance, and Musso

showed a special “then and now” video, which featured how far these students have come with their knowledge of the language and their ability to speak publically in such a short time. Following the speeches, students received special certificates to commemorate their hard work.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,

Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent ﬁtness fanatic. Those who ﬁnd themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym:

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly beneﬁt long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aﬁcionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout. Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night..

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

It is estimated that there are about 2 million cataract surgeries in the US each year. The treatment of cataracts has evolved over the years and now we can offer excellent visual outcomes to our patients with minimal risk and low incidence of complications. Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when

driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or

contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and

most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difﬁcult. This is when problems like infection, stufﬁness or throat irritation may occur.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to ﬂushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a ﬁxture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “Thats what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentlemen approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the women whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae, and without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.” 340510N0228

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

Lori Ann Nocerino Sora, a resident of West Babylon. LI (formerly of Amity Harbor) died February 12th, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip. She was 48 years old. Lori Ann was born on October 25th, 1969 in Plainview, LI to Ralph T. and Carol Ann (Claps) Nocerino. She was employed by Harbor Insurance Agency, LLC as an Insurance Broker. Lori Ann was a member of the West Babylon Fire Department where she was an EMT. Survivors include her parents Ralph and Carol Ann Nocerino, her husband Michael, her children Alexandria, Dominick and Antonia, her sister Dawn Mari Dalto

(James), her nephew and nieces Anthony, Adrianna and Victoria Dalto, her uncle Frank A. Nocerino (Geralen) and her great aunt Antonette Morea. She is also survived by many cousins and friends. Deacon Rich Ferri conducted prayers at the funeral home on Friday evening, February 16th. The Reverend Gerard Gordon, pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial at the church assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Private Cremation followed.
