In honor of World Read Aloud Day on February 1st, students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District created a graffiti wall. In an effort to spread kindness, third-graders from Brittany Mueller’s class at Babylon Memorial Grade School recently worked to bring smiles and joy to children currently fighting childhood cancer. Ms. Mueller, a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, informed her students of the school’s highly regarded THON fundraiser, a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer.

Every year in February, Penn State hosts its THON weekend at the campus’s Bryce Jordan Center, a 46-hour no sitting, no sleeping marathon which is attended by students, volunteers and families of the Four Diamonds Fund. During the annual event, more than 700 Penn State students showcase their dance moves for the attendees, bringing countless smiles and joy to all of those in attendance. After learning about the efforts of THON, Ms. Mueller’s students engaged

Bringing Smiles in an activity in which they created “kids mail” for the sick children, writing messages filled with positive energy and happy messages. The letters are going to be delivered to the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in hopes of lifting their spirits in advance of this year’s THON. Lecture on the Law Students enrolled in Criminal Justice and Law and Order classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School learned about the intricacies of the law during a recent in-school lecture with the newly appointed Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy

Sini. While visiting the students, Sini spoke about criminal justice practices in Suffolk, offering the students a firsthand glimpse into the highly sought-after career path. Additionally, he spoke about how he is working

diligently alongside county officials and the Suffolk County Police Department to rid the MS-13 street gang off of Long Island. The students, who are currently in the midst of research projects on gangs, asked Sini questions to further support their work.

Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will ﬂy by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netﬂix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. Student representatives of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America recently attended a DECA competition held at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, competing against other prominent high schools from Suffolk in multiple professional categories. Throughout the course of the competition, Babylon displayed their talents

against other Long Island schools and performed incredibly well in events spanning subjects such as accounting, finance, apparel and accessories marketing, public speaking, job interview and visual advertising. Due to their outstanding efforts, 62 of the total 100 Babylon-Junior Senior High School students have qualified to compete in the New York State Career Competition held

TOOKER TRIES TO ESCAPE - Lynnmarie Gendron’s fifth-grade students at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School participated in an escape room experience on February 2nd. The teams worked together to solve puzzles and math problems that involved context clues. Once the team correctly answered the problem, they had the four-digit code to open each treasure chest.
