The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. we are intensely aware of their absence to the point the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. But, as time goes on we learn to cope with and accept our loss. However, the absence of our loved one remains with us forever. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are sill conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. As we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives-not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in the moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

West Babylon School District is piloting an enrichment program for grades 1-5. The program is beginning at Tooker Avenue Elementary School this year with the goal of expanding to each of the elementary schools in the near future. Students are pulled out of their classrooms to work with teacher Mr. DeBiccari for their enrichment lessons, which focus on hands-on, STEMbased activities as well as advanced reading, writing
and math. Students are chosen to participate in the program based on data and teacher recommendations. Students who are receiving tier 1 or 2 support services are also re-evaluated three times
per year to make sure each of their specific needs are being met. The overall goal is to have specific growth in each of the subject areas while helping to create stronger students with greater academic success.
