Babylon High School Advanced Placement Government and Government 12R classes had the chance to take an inside look at the role government plays on the local and state level during a recent visit with New York State Senator Phil Boyle. During the workshop, Boyle spoke about his background, the role of the senate and the reasons why he chose to get into
politics. “I’ve always wanted to do something to help people, which is why I ran for office,” he said. The 30-year career politician also described how elected officials are often best known for few key issues. For Senator Boyle, he noted that his key issues are working to combat the heroin and opioid problem, access to forensic resources and animal welfare.
Concluding the program, students asked the senator questions about key issues. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the government from someone who works on their behalf in the senate,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We were very appreciative of Senator Boyle visiting our school and donating his time to speak with our students.”
Lessons In Aquaponics Babylon Elementary School first graders learned about how aquaponic systems work during a recent field trip with STEAM teacher Emily Moran to Babylon Junior-Senior High School. During the lesson, which was designed and aided by students from MaryBeth Schappert’s STEAM 1 class at the high school, the first
graders learned about the aquaponic cycle. They discussed how the fish help to feed the plants located in the system and how the plants filter the water that is returned to the fish. Students made observations about the different plants found growing in the classroom, the fish in the system and took an up-close look at both.
Back at the elementary school, Ms. Moran conducted follow-up lessons to review the material and lead a conversation about the differences between the high school’s aquaponic system and the hydroponic tower garden system located at the elementary school.
Avid environmentalist, local business owner, and Save The Great South Bay Board Member, Karen Vaccaro Marvin, was recently honored with the 2019 South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) Award Stewardship for her outstanding efforts to clean the Great South Bay. Marvin is the owner of South Shore Paddle Boards in Babylon VIllage and was recognized for leading her paddle tribe on dozens of clean ups along the South Shore as well as for her partnerships with other local organizations, such as Operation SPLASH! According to SSER Coordinator Jeremy Campbell, Marvin’s initiatives demonstrate that a single person can spur positive change in protecting and restoring the South Shore Estuary.
The Reserve Council Stewardship Award is an annual award that is designed to recognize citizens and organizations that have made significant contributions to protect and restore the South Shore Estuary’s unique and natural environment and maritime traditions. “We have the utmost respect for Karen’s incredible drive and passion to do things beyond her own self interest while always keeping the bigger picture in mind,” said Todd J. Shaw, Save The Great South Bay’s Board President. “Proud, grateful and honored are the words we choose to describe working with her as a valuable Director of Save the Great South Bay.” About Save the Great South Bay, Inc.

Holiday Fun With DECA Volunteers Babylon High School DECA students volunteered their time to help make the Breakfast with Santa event at the Babylon Elementary School a huge success. As they have done many years prior, the DECA stu-
dents helped serve breakfast, play games and collect tickets to see Santa. The event was well attended by students in the district, and a memorable time for children of all ages. DECA is a grade 9-12 cocurricular organization
that stresses community service and business aptitude. This year, the students have helped out at the high school homecoming, Safe Halloween, Old Fashioned Night of Shopping and Breakfast with Santa.

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Watch Out For The Post-Holiday “Blues”
Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people, but I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome; and this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. If you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!
