Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The mission of this non-proﬁt is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Lending A Helping Hand During Holidays homes with presents and food. Thanks to donations from the community and high school staff, they raised $1,500 for 10 families and the remaining families were adopted personally by central administration, transportation, teachers and families in the community. South Bay Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Association organized a mitten tree and coat drive in November. The school also held a virtual giving tree through a Target registry. South Bay’s PTA also holds “10 Can Day” each month. The fundraiser would typically happen at school, and students would bring in empty plastic bottles and cans. The PTA would then take the items for recycling and use the money to buy gift cards from Stop and Shop for the district food pantry. During the summer, one West Babylon

family offered to do the” 10 Can Day” offsite from their home. Parents can drop off recyclables to their home and this has resulted in an enormous surge in recycling. In October, the PTA presented the pantry with a check for $810. The West Babylon Junior High School held a gift drive through Target where staff members can purchase toys and gifts online. The junior high also held a door decorating contest to bring some holiday cheer to the students and the building. Santapogue Elementary School held a mitten tree to benefit the local women’s shelter. The school has collected more mittens in different sizes and colors than ever before. John F. Guardians of Rescue Finds Dog Struggling to Walk, Creates Medical Fund to Help Save Him In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured. He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians

of Rescue have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen. “This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,”

explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch. We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.”

Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam Bam. He was found alone and struggling to move, but could wag his tail. The funds will be put to use providing him with the necessary medical technology needed to help

him walk again, as well as help him receive the medical care he needs to recover from his other injuries, and be adopted out. Bam Bam will need a specialist in order to be able to walk again. During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with

that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care.

Throughout the West Babylon School District, students and staff came together to help their community during the holiday season. While their efforts were a bit different this year, their good intentions and deeds spread to those in need. On Dec. 10, a districtwide food drive through event was held. All food collected benefited the West Babylon School District food pantry located at the Senior High School. The pantry feeds West Babylon students and their families throughout the district. Prior to Thanksgiving, the West Babylon Senior High School distributed 70 turkeys, along with the fixings, to West Babylon families. The turkeys were donated by the Lions Club and Stop and Shop. The high school also adopted 20 families for Christmas this year and flooded their

Obituary Winters Bros. Chairman and Chief Executive Ofﬁcer Passes at the Age of 54 After a brief battle with COVID-19, it is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that Winters Bros. announces the passing of its beloved Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Joe Winters. As a loving, respected, and dedicated husband, father, brother and uncle, Joe was most known for his leadership role as Long Island’s largest provider of recycling and solid waste services in the region. Joe’s legacy as a steward of the regional environment can only be overshadowed by his dedication to philanthropic initiatives and love for his family. “My brother was the most

dedicated, hardworking individual I knew and that showed in every aspect of his life both personally and professionally,” said brother and co-owner, Jimmy Winters. “His commitment to improving our region for the betterment of future generations coupled with his passion for helping others, leaves behind an everlasting legacy that our family is extremely proud of and one we will continue in his memory.” A family man, Joe began working in his formative years alongside his mom, dad, uncle and four brothers as part of the family-owned waste collection company.

Joe got his start cleaning trucks, painting containers and driving trucks. He worked his fingers to the bone to learn the business and eventually lead the 70-yearold, family-run business to become the largest recycling and solid waste company on Long Island. Joe took his strong work ethic and translated it to his desire to create The Winters Center for Autism after his son, Sean, was diagnosed with Autism in 1998. The nonprofit center, an affiliate of the Winters Family Foundation, held a groundbreaking ceremony in August of 2020 to establish a vocational training and

job placement program with the goal of addressing the excessive unemployment disparities among people with autism. The Winters Center is committed to the enhancement and improvement of the quality of life for adults with autism through job creation, training and placement while helping caring Long Island employers develop and implement programs for capable and trained employees. “Joe’s efforts were tireless and his drive was never ending when it came to improving the lives of those around him,” said brother and co-owner Sean Winters.

Inc., but also in important projects and initiatives dear to his heart.” As a teenager, Joe took his passion and aptitude for boxing to become a professional boxer. During his tenure in the profession, Joe fought professionally as a heavyweight with the Professional Boxer’s Association. During that time, he established a professional career record of 12 wins and 2 losses, including multiple fights in Madison Square Garden in New York City and Caesars

Palace in Las Vegas. Following Joe’s boxing career, his passion turned to business. He purchased his first solid waste services company at the age of 25 and successfully built four large solid waste companies acquiring more than 100 waste and recycling companies along the way. Joe’s business acumen and expertise in the fields of finance, accounting, strategic planning, operations and marketing allowed him to grow over time. Joe is survived by his wife Michele, two sons, Patrick and Sean, and four brothers, Sean, Jimmy, Michael and Andrew.
