STUDENTS SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT ENDANGERED SPECIES
Eighth grade students in Mrs. Marchionna’s computer art class at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District recently did research and created posters to learn about different endangered species. To further spread awareness about these animals, students sold stuffed animals to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund during lunch periods. These stuffed animals could be purchased for a friend or themselves and were delivered the last week of December. The students raised $150 for the organization. The newspaper club at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District has restarted and is publishing the “Paw Print” newspaper, under the advisement of teacher Mrs. Marchionna, The club has been inactive for a number of years. The online newspaper features interviews with
staff and relevant content to appeal to the middle school students. The club is open to all students, who brainstorm the content for each of the editions. According to Mrs. Marchionna, students choose what interviews they would like to conduct and take the lead in the writing process. After
the writing process, the students edit and submit the content for publication. The club meets weekly and there are currently 16 members. The goal is to produce three editions of the four-page newspaper – which is available both in print and online – per year.

TOWN OF BABYLON TOTS FOR TOTS - Councilman Terence McSweeney, DuWayne Gregory, and the town board recently organized a toy drive for the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. This initiative aims to bring joy and hope to underprivileged children during the Christmas season. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation works alongside the U.S. Marine Corps to provide tangible signs of hope to economically disadvantaged children. Councilmen McSweeney and Gregory expressed their deep appreciation for the overwhelming support received from the community and town employees. McSweeney also mentioned the generosity of his neighbors and friends who contributed new toys and clothes, making this year’s charity drive a tremendous success.

A New Makerspace For Babylon Elementary School

Babylon Elementary School recently unveiled a brand-new Makerspace— an area of exploration and creativity—located in the school library. The Makerspace comes as part of a significant effort made by the District to promote innovative thinking and give its youngest students more opportunities for tactile learning. Students began using the Makerspace at the start of October, and have so far enjoyed this new addition to their learning experience. Students are given time in the Makerspace every
other week as part of the students’ enrichment classes. Makerspace activities include interacting with teddy bear counters, linking cubes, wooden blocks, magna-tiles, Lego wall construction, magnetic tracks and so much more. All of these activities are aimed at helping students engineer and build physical structures. The lessons also have an important value or lesson built into them, such as compromise and determination, as well as Babylon Elementary School’s three core
values: safety, respect and responsibility. “I am beyond excited to see our students taking advantage of our new Makerspace this school year,” said Babylon Elementary School Principal Thomas Keogh. “It is important that our students have time to explore and build, and the enrichment sessions in the Makerspace give students this opportunity. It gives them an environment where students can have fun, while also learning and growing intellectually.”
DELUCA’S MATH MARVELS MAKING STRIDES - The Math Marvels at DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District are hard at work on their mathematics skills this month. The fourth and fifth graders in the club are chosen based on their scores on the fall assessments. There are currently 12 students in the group, who meet every Tuesday after school. Under the advisement of teacher Kelly Gregorio, the Math Marvels students work on higher level math skills, mainly in a team-based learning environment. Working in small groups, they solve different math problems using various methods. Technology Ties Into Holiday Creations Students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District showed off their digital technology
skills during their library media classes in December. Centered around many of the different holiday activities this month, the
kindergarten and first grade students created their own special snow globe using the book “The Snow Globe Family”
by Jane O’Connor. After learning about the history of the ugly holiday sweater, second graders used Seesaw to create their own
ugly holiday sweater. Third grade students used Canva to create animated snowmen based on “Frosty the Snowman.”
The fourth and fifth graders also used Canva to create themselves trapped inside a snow globe.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB GETS LESSON IN ENERGY PRODUCTION - The Environmental Club from Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District met with members of the Covanta Energy team to discuss garbage and how it can be turned into energy instead of ending up in a landfill. Covanta taught the club members team how they burn trash to produce energy. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 29th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2024. The series will begin Sunday, January 14 at Heckscher State Park with an 80’s theme. Additional runs will be held January 21 at Robert Moses State Park with an oldies theme, January 28 at Sunken Meadow State Park with a 90’s theme, and February 4
at Jones Beach State Park, where you can come dressed as your favorite band or artist. All races are 5K in length and will start at 11 a.m. Registration is open for both full series signups and individual runs. Registration is online only, there will be no in-person registration. The entry fee for full series registration is $50.00 and day-of-race registration is $20.00 per race. Full series registration will close when the maximum amount of 1,100 registrants is
reached. Day-of-race registration is available online, beginning the Monday prior to each race, and accepted until 9 a.m. the day of the race. Cradle Of Aviation Museum Earns More Than $100,000 For Being Energy Efficient PSEG Long Island applauds the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City for making a commitment to the environment with a project estimated to reduce the museum’s energy usage by more than 400,000-kilowatt hours per year. That translates to approximately $70,000 per year in energy costs. The museum earned $115,696 in energy efficiency rebates from PSEG Long Island for installing more than 800 new LED lighting fixtures and LED lightbulbs in the main galleries of the aerospace museum. “PSEG Long Island commends the Cradle of Aviation Museum for replacing its lighting throughout the museum with energy efficient LEDs,” said Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for PSEG Long Island. “By making this significant upgrade, we were able to provide the museum with a significant rebate, and the exhibits look great with the new lighting.” “We are immensely grateful to the PSEG Long Island Energy Efficiency program for its invaluable support in enabling the Cradle of Aviation Museum to transition from outdated tungsten lighting to energy efficient LED lights,” said Jennifer Baxmeyer, executive director, Cradle of Aviation Museum. “The new lighting not only enhances the visual clarity of our exhibits, it also significantly improves our preservation of artifacts and reduces our carbon footprint.” For more information on PSEG Long Island’s available residential and commercial rebates and incentives, as well as energy saving tips, please visit www.psegliny.com/saveenergyandmoney.
