Long Island Applebee’s Locations to Raise Funds for Toys for Tots It’s ofﬁcially the season of giving! Applebee’s locations in Long Island recently announced the 22nd annual fundraising campaign to raise funds in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s is providing guests with multiple ways to make a child’s Christmas! For a limited time only you can buy Tots for Tots by adding tater tots to any order for just a $3 donation. Guests can also round up their checks or donate a dollar amount to show their support. One hundred percent of the donation

The Town of Babylon has extended permits for outdoor dining to restaurants that have the retroﬁtted outdoor dining options for the colder months. By the time the ﬁrst season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:

The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident

The North Babylon school community came together on Nov. 21 to collect non-perishable food items, health and hygiene products, as well as new hats, scarves and gloves for families in need. The items collected during the food drive, which was sponsored by the district’s athletic department, will help

support the Bulldog Cupboard food pantry and the North Babylon community. Jason Friesen, the district’s director of physical education, health education, recreation and athletics, offered his thanks to varsity and junior varsity coaches Michael Cashman, Steve Corrado, Sarah Lambert, Matt Temme

and Alex VanRossem for volunteering to collect the items for donation. Additionally, he thanked Alyssa Imhof, who runs the district’s food pantry, as well as the students and student athletes who donated food and supplies. “It was wonderful to see so much support by the community for the community,” he said.

Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with

someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Untreated, OSA can impact proper weight gain and growth and lead to behavioral and learning problems. “Sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and early detection and treatment of sleep disorders is very important for a child’s health and well-being,” said the Center’s Pediatric Medical Director and Pediatric Pulmonologist Dmitriy Vaysman, MD. “Studies have shown that children who get an adequate amount of sleep regularly have improved attention, behavior, memory, and mental and physical health.” Dr. Vaysman said that the proper amount of sleep for children differs depending on age. For example, infants need 12 to 16 hours of sleep, school-age pre-teens need between 9 to 11 hours of sleep while teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep. Diagnosis of childhood sleep issues is done through a consultation with a Pediatric Center Sleep specialist and then an overnight stay for testing in one of the sleep center rooms. Parents stay with their child. No invasive equipment is used and the testing involves measuring breathing, brainwaves and

limb movement. The most common treatment for obstructive sleep disorders in younger children are removal of tonsils and adenoids to open the airway. If other comorbidities are involved, modes of therapy could include nightly treatment with a CPAP machine. “Most people only think of adults when discussing sleep services, but children should not be snoring on a nightly basis,” said CHS’s Director of Sleep Services Brendan Duffy, RPSGT. “Our Pediatric Sleep Center is available to Long Island families to allow our children to get the treatment they need.” For more information on the Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center or to make an appointment call (631) 321-2100.
