LISFA is the premier organization for young emerging string players and string educators in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Each year, they host an All-County festival consisting of the most talented students in Long Island school orchestra programs. Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Suffolk County Awards United Way of Long Island $385,000 JumpSMART Grant

UNITED WAY OF LONG ISLAND AWARDED JUMPSMART GRANT - Suffolk County officials led by County Executive Steve Bellone present United Way of Long Island’s Theresa A. Regnante and Craig Fligstein a $385,OOO JumpSMART grant. Suffolk County awarded United Way of Long Island a $385,000 JumpSMART Small Business Downtown Investment Program grant to provide handson training in clean energy and renewables for veterans and young adults. This will include participants of United Way’s VetsBuild, YouthBuild, and PowerUp! Wind, Solar & Renewables programs. The Workforce

Development Training Academy is being developed in conjunction with United Way of Long Island’s Net Zero Energy Building Campaign, an award-winning project that is setting a new standard in renewable energy for non-profit organizations across Long Island. Going Net Zero means the organization will save more than $70,000 in utility costs to be reinvested in

community programs. United Way is transforming its Deer Park headquarters, the renamed Entenmann Family Center for Hope, into the next generation of energy efficiency. With 576 PV solar modules, the facility will function as a “command center” for non-profit organizations across Long Island that are impacted by catastrophic events like 2012’s Super

Storm Sandy, allowing these vital organizations to continue serving the communities who rely on them when their own facilities are unavailable. In County Executive Bellone’s remarks he said, “United Way of Long Island is a constant presence in the community and one of the pillars of the community. Their Workforce Development Training Academy will

provide our residents with greater access to financial opportunities and workforce development possibilities.” “We are grateful to the Suffolk County Legislature for their support, and to Steve Bellone for his commitment and leadership to invest in workforce development,” said Theresa A. MORE THAN 1,000 SOCKS DONATED - Students and staff at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District spent the month of October collecting new socks for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. The initiative was spearheaded by members of the school quality team and the student council. Each grade level competed to see who could collect the most socks. While second and third grades were declared the winners, everyone was a winner in the end with 1,149 pairs of socks collected to help the homeless across Long Island. Student-Musicians Participate In PEAK Fourteen students from the West Babylon School District recently attended the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s Parents, Educators and Kids Festival on Oct. 28 at Northport High School. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to make music along with their parents and teachers. Students participate in this miniconference alongside a parent, featuring fun and new musical experiences by some of Long Island’s

most innovative teachers. While at the festival, students participated in various workshops, including Ukulele, Drumtastic Drums Alive, Folk Dance, Parachute, Singing Games, World Music Drumming and Fitness.
