Also in attendance were Babylon Village’s Mayor Mary Adams, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Babylon Village Trustee Robyn Silvestri. do we have a mission. We exist solely on donations and will rely primarily on fundraising to help animals in need in these precarious times. Chippy’s Angel is a unique group of Long Islanders whose goal is to be a turn to organization to assist pet owners when unforeseen circumstances with food, supplies, medical bills, shelter and even temporary re-homing of animals we want to be there because no one else is. We also help Veterans feed and provide medical care for their pets/ service animals. We hope that if someone has reached out

to us for their beloved pets; they will in turn promise to help Chippy’s Angels in the future, when they are able. No one can do it alone; it takes a village. We also will try to our sister rescues, along with our own rescue efforts when we can. Our motto is “We will give you the ability fly”. Our foundation is a different kind of rescue. The is no “me” when it comes to rescuing and helping animals. It takes a community coming together to help the helpless and give a voice to the voiceless. Babylon. The Pack wanted to push that number up to 15,000 pounds and then additionally contribute pet food and supplies to a local pet rescue group. On Saturday, November 14th, Cub Scouts, friends, families and dogs joined together for a car parade led by the Babylon Village Fire Department. Also in attendance were Babylon Village’s Mayor Mary Adams, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Babylon Village Trustee Robyn Silvestri. Several Cub Scouts decided to bike the parade route, showing off handmade signs. At the parade destination, Cub Scouts Sam Garvey and Jack Burke led a group of volunteers to collect and

organize food donations. Volunteer efforts varied from a first-grade Tiger Scout holding up “Food Drive” signs on the sidewalk to Babylon Village trustees sorting canned goods. At the end of the day, Scouts had fully loaded up two minivans with boxes of food and filled half a pickup truck bed with pet supplies! After bringing the donations to the local food pantries, the final tally was confirmed. Donations weighed in at a total of 908 pounds, bringing the Garvey family’s total to 15,355 pounds of food! Cub Scout Pack 104 wishes to thank the local community members that came out to show their support and encourages everyone to consider acts of kindness.

Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group

UNITED AGAINST BULLYING - The Babylon Memorial Grade School community recently celebrated Unity Day, which was designed by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Unity Day programming at BMGS included class visitations on antibullying topics as well as a schoolwide activity in which students decorated paper sneakers with ways they can “stand up, stand strong, and stand together” against bullying. The sneakers were then displayed in the school’s main hallway for all to see. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We also sponsor Thyroid

Cancer Awareness Month, year-round awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

World Kindness Day is celebrated annually on November 13th to recognize and promote good deeds. To demonstrate kindness, West Babylon’s Cub Scout Pack 104 wanted to do something to support the local community and its many members who have been hit hard by the ongoing pandemic. Luckily, they didn’t have to look far for inspiration! One of their own fifth grade Webelos Scouts, Sam Garvey, and his family have successfully collected non-perishable food donations in their driveway since March. In that time, the Garveys collected thousands of pounds of food, all donated to the food pantries at St. Joseph’s & First Presbyterian churches in

Did You Know? While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding

the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage long-term. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created

by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving

Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. For the past four years, students at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School within the North Babylon School District have enjoyed a tradition of honoring community veterans by inviting them to the school’s annual Veterans Day Parade and Gallery of Heroes celebration. This year, due to COVID-19, the school reimagined those traditions by sharing a video slideshow honoring the men and women who served and are currently serving in the United States armed forces. As a special treat, the school’s honorary Veterans Day Parade Grand Marshal, United States Marine Corps Mr. George Shores, shared a special video message with Mrs. Rebholz’s kindergarten class, during which he thanked the school community for their continued dedication to the community’s veterans. “We didn’t want this year to go by without taking an opportunity to share our true appreciation and respect to those members of our community, our families our friends, who served and are currently serving,” Principal Vincent Fantauzzi said. “While our video tribute is not quite the same as having our heroes here in person, we hope that our heartfelt message of love, respect and gratitude is just as special for those brave men and women of our community!”

Town Of Babylon Honors Wyandanch School District Social Worker The Wyandanch Union Free School District’s social worker, Kelly Ureña, was honored at the Town of Babylon’s 22nd annual Hispanic Heritage Festival on Oct. 26. The virtual celebration, which was live streamed on the town’s Facebook page, highlighted three local Latino figures and acknowledged Ureña for her important contributions to the Hispanic community. During the celebration, Ureña attributed her love of community and her role with the Wyandanch School District to her parents who instilled in her at a young age the importance of being a helpful and kind neighbor. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Shaffer offered their congratulations and thanked Ureña for her ongoing, selfless service. Ureña has served Wyandanch schools since 2015. She is currently the social emotional learning specialist at Milton L. Olive Middle School. Prior to this role, she worked as the community site coordinator leading the family and community engagement
