WBFD FIREFGHTER OF THE YEAR RECOGNIZED - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized West Babylon Fire Department’s firefighter of the Year, John Manzi, Jr., at the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association Annual Dinner at the Coram Fire Department. While responding to a fire last Thanksgiving, firefighter Manzi recognized fellow firefighter Matthew Smith as unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. He got him out of the building initiating CPR and rescue breathing before being transported to the hospital. His quick response saved his fellow firefighter’s life!

Temperatures are dropping and many local residents may grow concerned about the ability to afford the high cost of heating their homes. That is why Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) wants to inform local residents that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has begun processing applications for the 2023-2024 Home Energy Assistance Program

(HEAP). “Our most vulnerable neighbors should never have to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table,” Legislator Donnelly said. “Luckily, HEAP will again provide much needed assistance to Suffolk County seniors struggling to cover their expenses.” Depending on the primary heating source, qualifying homeowners

can receive a basic HEAP benefit of between $400 and $976 for oil, propane, kerosene, natural gas or electricity. Renters can receive a benefit of $45 or $50. Each year, thousands of Suffolk County households receive assistance through HEAP. Assistance is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis while available. Households that received a benefit in last

According to the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, there are more than 150,000 veterans living in NYC. “Every veteran makes sacrifices and puts themselves in harm’s way in service to our country. During the course of their service, veterans may experience chronic stress, TBIs, or PTSD, especially if they served in combat. All of that impacts their mental health and increases

their risk of developing dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Understanding the impact of chronic stress and trauma on brain health, especially for veterans with dementia, and knowing how to help veterans when traumatic memories cause them distress is essential for those who serve veterans, so that they can provide the level of support our veterans need and very much deserve.” The training workshop will detail the impact of

chronic stress, TBIs, and PTSD on brain health, the relationship between these factors and dementia, and vital information on resources, services and non-pharmacological approaches available to help. More Than 1,000 Landmarks In All 50 States And 13 Foreign Countries Already Signed Up The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is inviting sites around the world, from large skyscrapers and stadiums to small town halls, to help Light the World in Teal on November 2 to raise Alzheimer’s awareness. To date, more than 1,000 landmarks in all 50 states and 13 foreign
