Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District for Fire Prevention Month and conducted outdoor assemblies for all K-5 students on Oct. 19. Students were able to see how firefighters put on their gear. They learned about how firefighters use their trucks to fight fires. Students also learned about how firefighters use special tools like the jaws of life to save lives. She officially joined the Babylon team on July 1 and replaces Dr. Peter Daly, who retired at the end of the school year. Ms. Lunetta has served as Babylon Schools’ senior audit manager for the past 10 years as an employee of Cullen & Danowski. Forest Avenue Garden Connects School And Community Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is showing off its green thumb with its student garden. The garden began last year as a part of the mentor program at the school. The students led the task of getting the project started, and it has just taken off from there, according to Forest Avenue Principal Gayle Manchisi. Each grade level has a different vegetable in the

garden that was planted in late May. The classes each watered, weeded and cared for their vegetable. The project even pulled in families, who helped to harvest the vegetables on the weekends and during the summer months. “We reached out to families over the summer months to harvest some of the vegetables,” Manchisi said. “The cafeteria staff even got involved by bagging some of the harvested vegetables

and handing them out to families with bagged lunches over the summer.” The school really wanted to involve the whole community in the project while also making it a learning experience for the students. For grades one and two, the planting and growing is woven into their science curriculum. Those grades also started to grow their vegetables in class so they could see how the seeds germinated.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will launch its nationwide Alzheimer’s walk at Babylon Town Hall (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst) on Saturday, October 30, at 10:00 am. Long Islanders are invited to take park in the “Alzheimer’s Walk in The Park” and can register in advance by visiting www. afawalk.com. Proceeds raised at the family-friendly event, which will also include health and wellness activities and refreshments,

New Principal Appointed At Babylon Elementary

Babylon School District has named Danielle Flaumenhaft as Principal of Babylon Elementary School, effective July 1. She replaces Travis Davey, who has taken a new administrative position within the Babylon School District. Ms. Flaumenhaft comes to Babylon from the West Babylon School District, where she previously served as a literacy consultant. She also served

as an elementary principal and assistant principal in East Islip and Three Village school districts, respectively. “I feel very fortunate to spend my day with such an amazing community,” Ms. Flaumenhaft said. “From my first day, I was welcomed by everyone, and it is clear that this is a community that works together for the children who live and go to school here in Babylon.”

Ms. Flaumenhaft holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from SUNY Cortland and a master’s degree in international education and development from Boston University. She additionally holds a Master of Science in literacy from Dowling College and an advanced graduate certificate in administration from SUNY Stony Brook.

The Complicated Connection Between Black Cats, Witches And Halloween

Come October, it’s hard to miss the many indelible images associated with Halloween. Homeowners may decorate their home exteriors with scarecrows, inflatable ghouls and goblins, and jack-o’lanterns. Local businesses also may get in on the fun, offering “spooktacular” sales and decorating their storefronts with images of vampires, witches and other symbols of Halloween. Black cats have become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History. com, the notion of black

cats as bad omens can be traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection to sorcery could explain the link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today.

Despite the lengthy history suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. One researcher at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History found that Welsh folklore depicted black cats as harbingers of good luck, and even noted their ability to predict the weather. Black cats are one of many symbols of Halloween. And much like jack-o’-lanterns and trickor-treating, the story of how black cats came to be associated with Halloween is interesting and thoughtprovoking.

Whether riding their bikes or sporting their favorite sneakers, the students started their day with some physical activity before they made their way to their respective schools.
