Babylon Village Arts Council’s Artist Of The Month Babylon Village Arts Council’s featured artist for the month of October is local photographer Al Ruggeri. His exhibit is displayed at Sterling National Bank at 180 West Main Street, Babylon Village. Al Ruggeri has been a Babylon Village resident for over 40 years. He is married and he and his wife, Kathy, raised two sons. After a successful career at New York Life Insurance Company, he is now retired. Throughout his years in the Village, he has been involved in many local civic groups and activities. When his children were young, he coached in the

Babylon Little League, he was a founding member of the Babylon Schools Friends of the Arts, and served as the Treasurer for the Babylon Boosters for a number of years. He is currently on the Steering Committee for Conklin House. Al’s love of photography has grown during his retirement years, as has his love of travel. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - Long Island will again unite in the fight against breast cancer with two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks this year, on Sunday, October 17 at Jones Beach and Saturday, October 20 on Main Street in Riverhead. Photo credit: American Cancer Society Long Island, home to the largest Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement in the United States, again will host two powerful Making Strides walks on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Jones Beach State Park and Saturday, October 30, 2021 on Main Street in Riverhead, providing reimagined and new ways to support and fund the future of breast cancer research and programs. Both events will be held in accordance with CDC and NY State guidelines to ensure the safety of all attendees. Last year’s walk became virtual events due to the pandemic. In 2019, an estimated 65,000 participants joined the effort raising more than $2.5 million. Advance registration is free and open to individuals, teams, families, and groups at www.makingstrideswalk. org/longisland. The Society is requesting that all individuals sign up in advance to be kept abreast of important details, which will be updated regularly. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional walk might look different but our passion and

commitment to fight breast cancer is unchanged,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director of Development. “The health and safety of all our guests and participants is our number one priority. As the fall draws closer, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of our supporters, staff, and volunteers, including options that help mitigate individual and community health risks,” she added. In its 28th year on Long Island, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the U.S. In New York, the American Cancer Society estimates 17,540 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 2,510 will succumb to the disease. Nationwide, 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. The American Cancer Society is the nation’s nonprofit leader in the

Great South Bay Townships Unite With Northwell Health For Annual Pink By The Bay Campaign

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio recently gathered with Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, representatives from Northwell Health and other community health activists for the kickoff to the third annual Pink by the Bay Northwell Health campaign to bring breast cancer awareness into our Great South Bay communities. October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual

international campaign to shine light on the impact of breast cancer and show support for those who have been affected by the disease. “On Long Island alone, over 2,600 women are affected by breast cancer every year, 17 percent of them between the towns of Babylon and Islip,” according to Dr. Deb Salas-Lopez, senior vice president of community and population health at Northwell. “The point of this whole campaign is to raise awareness of breast health in men and women during

not just the month of October, but year round,” said Town Clerk Gerry Compitello. “We hope to see that the color pink will serve as a reminder to each and every one of you just to get checked.” This October, over 200 businesses within Babylon and Islip towns will participate in Pink by the Bay by shining pink lights and hanging pink ribbons. At Babylon Town Hall, the cupola will be illuminated pink throughout the month in commemoration of breast cancer awareness.

Teachers Federal Credit Union Supports LI Community with Family Service League Helping Long Island neighbors is at the heart of Teachers Federal Credit Union, and Teachers is proud to support Family Service League, a shining light in the community, and their 2021 Walk for Wellness. Family Service League is a grassroots social service agency that provides security, support, and empowers more than 50,000 of the Long Island community’s most vulnerable to mobilize their strengths and

improve their quality of life. In solidarity with their mission, Teachers donated shoes for back-to-school to over 100 children currently living in a Family Service League Shelter in Brentwood, NY, to boost back-to-school confidence and set them up for success in their educational journeys. To further support, Teachers attended and participated in the 2021 FSL Walk for Wellness on September 11, 2021 which

was held at Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon, NY. The annual walk, run and bike helps build FSL awareness and raise muchneeded funds for the 60 critical programs that thousands of children and adults rely on each day. This year’s Annual FSL Wall for Wellness was dedicated to honoring those lost on September 11th and recognizing the actions of those who helped heal the community following.

Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, and the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition kicked off Breast Health Awareness Month with their annual Pink Flags Celebration. The celebration was held at the Catholic Health Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan located at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip. As part of the month long awareness event, pink flags have been placed throughout the hospital campus with tags available for purchase to honor a breast cancer survivor or in recognition of a loved one who has passed due to the disease. Donations are made to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to support those diagnosed with breast cancer in a variety of ways, including assistance with bills, house cleaning, food, wigs, prosthesis and other free services. “Good Samaritan Hospital has been a partner of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition since our inception,” said West Islip Breast Cancer

Coalition President Margaret Campise. “When a need for breast health resources became apparent, the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was developed along with the Breast Health Center at Good Samaritan. Both have worked hand-inhand since 1993 to support those diagnosed with and under treatment for breast cancer. These services are not only for residents in West Islip, but instead is for those throughout the south shore of Suffolk County.” This year, another milestone in breast health was reached—the 10th Anniversary of Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center, located at 735 Montauk Highway in West Islip. “Ten years ago, a community need to provide local breast imaging was fulfilled,” said Good Samaritan COO Col. On September 12, 2021, Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently held its annual Open House. The weather and day could not have been more perfect. Under a beautiful sky, attendees numbering almost 500, enjoyed scheduled tours and demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, games, children’s activities, music and raffles. There were donkey cart rides, natural horsemanship and cattle lassoing demonstrations, mini horse dress ups, hugs with “Olaf “the chicken, cowboy games, and pumpkin painting.
